Default Valve Tap - Valve Lash - Only when cold, goes away after warm - Thoughts?

89dx with 180k.

Maintained at the dealer until I got it at 178k. Sounds like valve tap when cold, but once warmed up in a few minutes it goes away and stays away.

Also weird that it is more significant under acceleration when cold.

Say it's cold-idling at 1400... then if I accelerate to 2k, louder/faster, but then off the gas it is sometimes 'gone' as it revs down 1900-1400... once warmed up its gone completely.

Anything I should worry about? I have never personally tried to measure gap/adjust valves... time to start? The searches showed people just living with it, that after putting it in spec and still having, not much you can do, it's just worn...

My concern is, I want this engine to last a long *** time... so anything I can do to help it...

Input welcome!

That can very well be normal from the mileage on the car. Valve lash adjustments are eassy, check your haynes manual

Easy to check/adjust?

All you need is an 10mm closed end wrench, feeler gauge and a flat head, 17 or 19mm socket (cant remeber nut size for crankshaft) and half inch rachet. YOur manual will give you step by step instructions.

iv done valve lash, its very easy if you follow the manual. but if this noise goes away when it warms up.. and the noise hasnt gotten worse then i wouldnt worry about this at all. you should its not a knock? or is it a tick. if its more of a knock, sounds like a diesel then its probalby piston slap.

Would the knock or tick go away when warm? Piston slap would go away when warm? Have yet to do this, been side tracked. What feeler gauges do I need? Would be going to a sears hardware... I guess if I check my Haynes it will give me which ones to use, and I'll buy a set that has the #s i need.

Hey man. I have the same problem. Noisy ticking coming from the motor while it is cold. Sounds like a little air compressor or something. But one the car is warmed up it gets way quieter, almost no noise at all. I was sure it was something with the valves, maybe I should research adjusting them too. And I am pretty sure it is not a knock. Knocks usually sound to me like a hammer hitting the block. This is a smaller sound.

thanks

metals expand at diffrent rates depending on what kind of metal it is. so the noise could go away when its warm if its slightly out of range and needs to be adjusted.

although mine are adjusted like that on purpous so things dont bind or hold the valves open when they get hot . But a stock motor does not have that drastic of cylinder temp.
