Default From 6th to 2nd on the highway..

My girlfriend was driving my Si home after i got plastered, I was teaching her to downshift and she went from 6th to 2nd at 60 mph. My car is now rumbling after the car gets warmed up and feels like an earthquake in neutral. Any comments on what you think has happened?

Teaching while plastered AND letting your girlfriend drive?! lol

Maybe messed up one of following: clutch, synchro, motor mount, rod, piston/valve contact, fried rings, onions or some pickles.

It should have hit fuel cut, unless she gunned it even harder after downshifting. Have to hear or see the car in person to be able to tell.

Try to be a real smooth talker and let the warranty do all the work for you ^^

Yeah 6th to 4th is a little sneaky. The gears are real close so it's easy to accidentally slam it into 2nd.

Lesson learned! Good luck with the fix.

it wasnt about closeness. she was looking right at it and stil put it in. too bad i had too much to drink. i was just trying to teach her some highway driving. if it's a lot of damage, which it feels like it is; i will either go insurance or try to pull of something under warranty. THird option: make her pay for most of it.

She must have forced it in. The car easily goes from 6th to 4th no problem at 60mph. But 2nd will offer alot of resistance for her to counter.

Insurance won't cover it. You'll have to pray your warranty will.

As previously stated, try to sweet talk your way out of this one. I mean dealers are never honest with us, so why should you be honest with them?

Just go in there and tell them the car has been acting up and you are really angry because this is such a new car and it shouldn't have any issues. Try to be the aggressor, but not too demanding or the dealership won't cooperate. You can add in some story about how you've owned Hondas your whole life and never had problems and you are very unhappy with the situation.

And if they investigate and say no, what harm is there in trying?

your engine is toast... probably bent some valves. Good luck at the dealer since they can tell how high the car was revved.

Motor mounts are definitely screwed. That's the "earthquake" you feel in neutral.

-Oh, and no offense, but I'd get a new girlfriend. She obviously downshifted into 2nd on purpose, and fucked up your car with malice. Either that or she's not the brightest crayon you coud've pulled out of the box.

They will surely investigate before they hand you over some brand new expensive parts. They'll tap the ECU for sure. Good luck. And next time keep the car to yourself.

Most likely bent valves man, but it could be a broking valve spring or a couple of things, it's hard to say. Let us know what they find. I've done the same thing, it's not that hard to do, depending on the car and how you hold the shifter.

About three times I went to 3-2 (instead of 4th) while at the top of third racing, got the car a little sidways (supra). And once went from 5th to 4th (instead of 6th) at about 135-140mph in a Supra Turbo. It was just luck or something else that I haven't broke anything yet. Good luck.

I did notice that it was possible to skip fourth and slip to second after putting Royal Purple in the tranny. Didn't engage the clutch obviously but you can do it with performance oil in the tranny.

Did you have new oil in the tranny?

8300 RPM in 2nd gear = 56 MPH according to Road and Track, 58 MPH according to my calculations.

If you really *were* going 60 MPH, then a 2nd gear mis-shift results in just a bit of over-rev. More likely than not no worries.

HOWEVER, if you were going 65 MPH, then you'll be over 9K in 2nd, bad things can happen.
69MPH, nearing 10K, bad things almost certainly happen.

It's also possible that the mis-shift was into 1st, not 2nd, then at 60 MPH very very bad things happen. Depends on how much you remember.

FWIW, the rev limiter does *NOT* and *CAN NOT* prevent over rev on a down shift!

If it feels like an earthquake in neutral, I hope you are not still driving. Tow the sucker in.

Highly unlikely that the motor mounts were damaged.

Good luck with trying to have warranty cover it... as blue rocket mentioned they'll check your ECM and discover exactly what happen... hopefully they dont pin you with warranty fraud after that

I've seen quite a few mis-shifted motors and not once have the motor mounts been seriously effected. Its definantly possible but not typical.
