How to verify if motor is legitimate
Sorry if i posted in the wrong forum. I was looking to buy a b16a3 motor to swap into my civic but wanted to know how do you determine if the motor is legitimate. Do you call up the chp with the vin number or how does it go?

Definitely a good starting point, but not always too accurate.
The best way would be to call the cops, althought this has been asked and answered a few times in the past few weeks. I think the answer for California is that if you call the cops they are going to want you to bring the thing in before they'll run it. Search around a bit and read though. Cops here in Wisconsin are a little easier about that stuff
BTW my seats look awesome thanks again Brian

If the motor is still in the car you can do a compression and leakdown test... that really the only thing you can do. I guss you could do a carfax, but theres no telling if the motor has already been swapped.

thats what i thought to... and if you know anyone who's a cop, it's prolly easiest to have them check it

Yes, I had wanted to know how to tell if the motor is stolen or not. I had a bad experience with buying a motor from a junkyard. It turned out be stolen but cause I had paperwork for the engine they just towed my car and removed the engine. I just wanted a way to check first before I buy again. Some of the engines I looked at are already out of the car they came from so do I just do a carfax check with the vin from the motor?
Thanks for all the help and reply's

Yeah, do a carfax, and make sure you get a copy of the title and bill of sale with signatures from whomever you buy the motor. That way if they do decide to screw you over, you have a document that holds legal weight.
