Default Legality of B16 in California

I live in Los Angeles and plan on having a B16 installed in my rex by the end of the summer. However, recently it was time to smog my car in order to register my car. This got me thinking about the leaglity of a swap. Isn't it true that the swap elimnates the emissions controls or is that optional? Will I still be able to register my car? I've heard that engine swaps are legal as long as the engine is the same year or newer than the car it is being put into. Is this true? I know I've asked a lot of quesitons so any info you have on the legality and/or convience of swaps in California would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

You can always go find a family member in some other state that doesn't have emissions and register it there. One option that might work.

My CRX w/b16 passed the sniffer, as far as the legality wise JDM engines are not. May the force be with you!

It is possible to get a BAR sticker with JDM B16. I don't know if this will work all the time, but I have seen two CRX with JDM, one a 1G ZC and the other this b16. Both had bar stickers and just had to use the intake manifold and all smog equipment off of a USDM car with a simular engine. The ZC intake mani was from a 86 Teg. Read this post for more info.
