Default B16 Legality in California

I live in Los Angeles and plan on having a B16 installed in my rex by the end of the summer. However, recently it was time to smog my car in order to register my car. This got me thinking about the leaglity of a swap. Isn't it true that the swap elimnates the emissions controls or is that optional? Will I still be able to register my car? I've heard that engine swaps are legal as long as the engine is the same year or newer than the car it is being put into. Is this true? I know I've asked a lot of quesitons so any info you have on the legality and/or convience of swaps in California would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

it'll be ok as long as its USDM b16a same year or newer than your car. just put all the stock emission components for it. I could be wrong, but i also heard that JDM motors are smog legal now in KALI. can someone confirm this? can the REF find out what year a jdm b16a block is from. peace

Supposedly the engine should be newer than your car, from the same class (car, small truck, etc), and have all the emissions equiment that came with the engine.
