Default Car shut off while on freeway

1999 Civic Lx sedan

was driving home today from school, going about 70-80 with music turned on, and all of a sudden the music turns off and my rpm gauge drops to 0...i press the gas but no power, everything shut off, so I merge to the right and quicly exit the highway going uphill towards the stop light and i mess w/ the key area and the power returns....anyone know what is going on? anyone have this problem before or ever hear of it? TIA

Does your engine crank when you try to start it? Maybe a snapped timing belt...if not that, it could be something electrical.

most likely there is an electrical problem. my alternator did this when it went bad.
have it checked out, also check the wire to your battery and alternator.

That sounds like an alternator. That happened in my GMC Sonoma. I was making a left-hand turn, and all of the sudden, my power steering locked up, my car shut off, and I had to e-brake to a stop because my power brakes seized up too (fluid pressure).

There is a recall from Honda in regards to the Ignition Switch. Reason for the recall was the electrical portion of the switch was failing causing the car to die without warning. I recommend calling your local dealer and have them run your car for any outstanding recalls. Who knows maybe its still outstanding on your vehicle and Honda will pay to have your car fixed.

All of your problems seem to stem from or be fixed by moving the key differently. I would replace the ignition switch and see if that clears it up.

you guys are crackheads. I say it's worn out contacts in the ignition switch. He said he wiggled it and it started it, and i know there was a TSB a few years ago about this problem on EK's. Bring it to a dealer, there was a recall, they're obligated to check to see if it's been replaced
