Flywheel question
Bought an Exedy flywheel and Exedy stage 1 clutch kit. Took it to my mechanic to get installed, because my old clutch was worn out. Mechanic swears that he couldn't install the flywheel because it has 9 bolt holes, and doesn't match up with the clutch, which has 6 bolt holes. He also said the hole for the bearing in the flywheel was too small. I double checked the part numbers on the clutch and flywheel and the flywheel is made to fit my 1991 Integra LS. Is it just that the mech doesn't have experience with performance parts, or does he have a point? Now I will probably have to take it to a performance guy, and pay the labor twice.
I don't think he knows what he's doing. The 9 holes in the middle is bolted on the engine and the 6 bolts around the flywheel is to bolt the clutch. Also hit the bearing in with a mallet that could get it in the flywheel hole. It does fit.
Your mechanic may know what he is doing or not. Here is the info I have figured out.
The DOHC B-series engines (90-93 Integra) have 8 bolts for the flywheel and 9 bolts to hold the pressure plate on.
The SOHC engines (?) have 6 bolts for the flywheel. I do not know how many pressure plate bolts.
If you have the parts (or can look at them) this is pretty easy to figure out on your own to verify what the mechanic is telling you.

I bet they sent you a flywheel for a SOHC engine. I changed the clutch on my brother's del Sol Si last summer, D16Z6 engine and that flywheel had 6 bolts in the middle. My flywheel on my B18C1 has 8 bolts in the middle to hold it to the crank shaft.
some Aftermarket Flywheels I've installed have only had 6 bolt holes versus the 9 it should have. It works fine. If the pressure plate goes on the flywheel fine, then you you have the right kit.....Exedy Clutches FTW.

ohhh my bad, yeah most flywheels do have 9 holes around the outer edge in order to accomodate all clutch pressure plates. I think my OEM cluth PP had 6 bolts holding it to the flywheel, while my ClutchMasters Stage 1 has 9 bolts. So yeah that shouldn't be a problem. If the holes aren't lining up, just tell the mechanic to rotate the pressure plate around a little more until they do line up.
As for the pilot bearing, the flywheel should have come with a new pilot bearing which should fit right into the flywheel.

Wow. Thanks for all of the excellent advice, people. So what I have gathered from all the different opinons is that the 9 hole Exedy flywheel should work with the 6 hole Exedy clutch. Does this sound right? I don't think the flywheel came with a bearing though.
i vaguely remember when i had my toda flywheel installed my mechanic said something about using more bolts to hold it on than the stock one required. this was on a b18c1

Most clutch kits come with a pilot bearing. My clutch kit came with one, and so did my flywheel, so I ended up with 2 brand new pilot bearings when I replaced my clutch.
I dont know if this applies, but when my mechanic installed my clutch and flywheel, he said the pilot bearing wouldnt fit in the flywheel as well. He didn't know that you put it in through the backside of the flywheel. I dont know if that's how all cars are or not, but it may be the solution to the problem.
