Default weld/lathe pics

recent pics of a bike i welded a gusset type thing on, and some lathe work for my car/mess around stuff.

whats the point of that gusset?
what mateial is the frame also?
did you think about plating the sides top tup to bottom tube instead, wouldve been much stronger...

good lathe work though.

the point of the gusset is to cover a hairline crack that formed, i welded the crack then ground the weld down and put the plate over it... i didnt really feel like putting that much effort into it. its 4130 chromoly with 309 filler. (charts said for that grade of 4130 id need 25% chromium and 12-14% nickel). i was going to use er 80s-2 but i didnt have any. thanks on the lathe it was my first time using it.

hmm, i wouldve just used 70s2 myself, but good luck, and hopefully itll be fine. im sure it will.

i know 70s2 is good for chromolly, but for this grade it would not have worked.

70S2 would have worked just fine. The 309 filler is a brittle weld when not on stainless....hopefully it works.

im not really sayin anything.. im sayin that jim said this is what i should use, and not to use 70s2 because of the chromium and nickel contents in this particular grade of 4130.

they use the same downtube gusset on most of their frames its a pretty unique shape

all i can say is dont buy a fit.. this isint the first one thats cracked. horrible quality.
