Default inside of head was bead blasted, now cam won't rotate freely...

I recently sent my head and block off to a machine shop to get a bore, valve job, cleaned, etc. When I got it back, it was all bead blasted and looks great. Tonite, i went to a put a aftermarket cam into this d16z6 head and the cam now wont spin freely. One of the lobes hits the side of the head. Also, the journals now are not shiny, but dull. There are no digs, so is this okay or will it be a problem? Also, this cam works fine in an untouched, stock head...why would this be? I know some heads use bearings, but these dont; so what could it be?

so does anybody know why my head would be getting in the way of the cam?

Here is the obx cam and where it hits.

Here is the stock cam, that clears

Here is where it hits.

I had this in a z6 head before without any problems, but this head seems to have an issue even though it too is from a z6. I'm going to look at the castings and measure the differences between the head, but until then....

yes, that is the vtec lobe hitting. It does it only on cylinder 2 and 3. 1 and 4 are fine. I think I may just do a little grinding on the head to let it clear. I know grinding sounds scary, but its barely catching. Anyone think this is a horrible idea?

it's not a problem with the cam, it fits in every other z6 head I have, but I had this one reworked a little so im using it. I'll just grind a little.

I agree, but it is barely hitting. I think it's just a small flaw in the casting, i dont know what else it could be. It is definetly a d16z6 head. Knowing that, I could measure; but what's point? I still know I need to grind some. I'm open to your input, which is why i started the thread, so if im missing something, please let me know

If you are saying that the head was worked on......is there a possibility that cam journals were cut??
.......See if you can compare it with another head and measure the tolerances.....
Tell us how it goes. GL.

agreed

I would get a stock cam and see if it does the same thing.

I never really thought about the journals being cut. It's a possibility I'm certainly hoping isn't the case. I will check that though

Look up at the pics. I did it with a stock cam and it didn't hit

I guess I'll just measure to see if the journals were cut and if not, grinding is what I'll do
