Default How much of pain to remove VSS?

I'm having this weird noise and now my speedo will intermittingly work then when it goes out the noise stops...so I will need to take it apart to see if it's the cable or the vss itself...just wondering if any of you had experience how easy/hard it is to remove it?
I need to look at it during daylight cause when I get home it's too dark out and I have no garage...thanks in advance.

I'm still trying to find a good pic of where it is exactly!

make sure that the cable is all the way down. check to see if the clip is in also. your vss is on top of your tranny on the rear, close to your rear tranny mount. sorry never taken vss out so don't know. good luck

to remove hyou pull the cable out and take out a 10 mm bolt , spray some penetrating fluid on that ****, then you get under the car with some vice grips and twist it back and forth to loosen it and pull the assembly offff

This is missleading info....You dont even know what tranny he has....So how do you know where his VSS is?

Your VSS is in one of 2 places. Behind the speedo or in the tranny. It depends on which transmission you're using. Is your motor OBD0 or OBD1?

Also...Is your Vtec working? Are you getting any codes?

Considering this is an EF forum, AND the OP said he had a cable I think it's safe to say it is in the tranny.

I can' honestly remember if you have to pull it out to do it properly. I've pulled the cable from teh VSS and pushed it back in without removing the VSS. I think you need a clip too. I'm sure someone on here has a picture.

I pulled it off since it was barely on there...then I took it for a drive to see if it would make that wierd turning metal on metal (like ball bearings that sometimes catch on the metal).

I figured if there was no more noise then it would be the cable (since it was totallly disconnected from the rest of the VSS), but after barely going anywhere it still made that intermitten noise...so I'm pretty sure it's the VSS assembly that goes in the transmission itself.

The noise when it happens goes away when I'm coasting or depress (push in) the clutch...so we'll see.

On the bright side I did finally swapped my shitty azz totally torn to bare metal frame seats to some minty CRX DX seats! They're soooooo much nicer, plus I also scored a sweeeeeeet set of literally brand new seat covers for Si seats so all I need to find now is a couple of Si head rests to complete the transformation. Once I get my digital camera back I'll post before and after pics.

Next step will be to get the larger diameter and fart can muffler off and put in a stock Si exhaust...I'm headed to the muffler shop as soon as I post this.

Thanks for everyone's inputs...I appreciate your knowledge sharing!

MG

PS:
If anyone has a spare VSS assembly hit me up at mario.guerrero@gmail.com
I already posted a WTB ad but who knows...thanks!!!

You're an idiot.

ALL EF civics have the VSS behind the gauge cluster. Thats where it is. If you do an OBD1 or OBD2 engine swap then your VSS will be in the tranny.

I have a JDM B16A with a J1 tranny. There is no VSS on the tranny. Where your speedo cable ataches to your tranny is simply a gear setup. It's held in with a little clip and it pops right out. There is no sensor there.

OBD1&2 trannys have an electronic VSS on the tranny.

This is a VSS that is tranny mounted...I bet yours doesnt look like this. Tell me what engine you're running and what tranny you have.

THIS IS THE VSS FOR ALL EF's. The speedo cable sends a signal to this which goes to the ECU and is one of the things that enables Vtec (if you have it). If you have a speedo cable and it's not connected by wires to your cluster then this is what you have......

Just replace your speedo cable or the gear setup the speedo cable plugs into at the tranny...Whichever is screwed up.

ALL USDM EF's have a cable driven set-up! I don't care where the actual little VSS itself is!! We are talking about the tranny side of the set-up. It's either attached with an electronic wire OR a cable. This thread is talking about a cable set-up because the OP said it was cable. How can you even confuse that.

You're making this thread more than it needs to be. It's reallly a simple question with a simple answer to which a few people have helped answer except you.

B18c with a J4D S80 tranny installed by yours truly and can you guess which set-up I'm running? (Hint: Whichever darn one I want since they are physically interchangable! Just need to switch clusters accordingly.)

It's not your VSS that is making the noise and the noise may be completely unrelated to your speedo issues.

if the noise goes away when you're coasting i highly doubt its vss related , since it will be spinning while decreasing speed making the same damn noise, unless teh noise goes from a high pitch to low sound

The above picture is a VSS from a 92-95, they are nice cuz if they go bad, u can replace just the top electrical part...but like mentioned earlier, you can use a speed sensor from any 88-00 civic, even 90-01 integras...just for the 88-91 civics, they use a cable VSS which you will need for a cable cluster....

One other thing...when i swapped my cluster to an EK cluster, i had problems getting a VSS to fit because the 92-95 hit my mount, the only one that i got to work was a 96-2000 VSS but the hole for the 10mm bolt didn't line up so i had to notch it and i also had to change out the drive shaft for the sensor because they were differen't lengths, but all the ***** really interchangable

I guess I'm part to blame since I got the term VSS from a post about swapping out the stock CRX gauge cluster to another one and that poster described it as VSS the mechanical gear holder on the transmission.

Anyway I am quite certian it is related since it wasn't until last weekend when i was driving my rex when that noise was going on more often and I noticed the speedo's needle moving all over the place...and when the noise stopped the needle went to 0 mph...then when it would come back the needle went back to the right speed...then when I coasted the speedo's needle would work correctly...and of coure there is no noises coming from it when coasting.

Like I said I looked at it and the speedo cable was totally not connected, so I just moved it up and out of they way (completely disconnected), so that mechanical cable was not connected to the transmission therefore not moving the speedo gauge, but yet the noise was still going on, leading me to believe it's the 'VSS' mechanical assembly gear part that's attatched in the transmission. I don't have a long enough 3/8 extension to reach it so I'm gonna have to wait to buy/borrow one before I can take it out to visualy inspect it for any damage.

My money is on that the thing is screwed up so I'm considering looking into just biting the bullet and swapping a electronic VSS to it but we'll see.

No need to get all up in pissed off mode guys...I do appreciate your help!

EDIT:
I forgot to mention I have a 1991 CRX HF with a stock b15, that has a cable driven VSS...I think that will lay to rest the miscommunication.

Thanks 88rex and bejita for helping ()

To change to electronic you should get an electronic vss driven cluster first. I would just fix that cable vss

Right...that's why I'm looking into getting a Si or CRV cluster for the long run so I'll have to piece it together but for now if I can get a good deal on a mechanical one to just fix what I have I'll do that for a quick fix.

This is the link I was refering to in getting my 'wrong' VSS term.
