How many gallon is left when the gas light goes on?
Driving with the light on isn't a great idea to begin with cause you are also letting the dirt that settles at the bottom of the tank to get into your fuel lines. I never let the car go below a 1/4 tank but that's just me.

How would dirt ever get into your gas tank? Your fuel system is a closed system, meaning nothing than gas should ever be entered into it. Assuming you're using quality fuel, you should never need to replace your fuel filter.

When I replaced my fuel filter, I turned the old filter upside down to see what was filtered out, and bunch of the nastiest black crap came out. I am so glad I changed it when I did. I agree, it's a closed system, but somehow crap gets in.
I think I drove 40 miles with the light on once. It is a scary feeling knowing that your engine could cut out and leave you stranded.

I agree the Fuel filter should never have to be replaced! But for some darn reason i feel I just have to when you get to 100,000 miles. But I have also noticed when tipping it upside down the fuel is not clear and kinda yellowish brown so I think that means somthin. I poured the bad fuel into my lawnmower tank. The filters dont cost much anyways.
i am not sure about how many gallons, but I have heard the number 40 miles floating around a lot...I'd say about 1.5 gallons depending on your driving habits
it's not a serious issue, but bleeding your tank that low on a regular basis is hard on your fuel pump.... gas tank>= 1/4 tank=good idea

i drove about 65 miles when the tank was on E and the gas light went on for at least a good 25 miles and only put 11 gallons in the car
its different for every one really

remember though, just because you're engine cuts off does not mean that your tank is dry. There will always be some fuel that your pump cannot get to, and even if teh car runs in a striahgt line it is probably sucking some air when you go through turns or accel/brake hard.

I thought you're supposed to replace the fuel filter around every 30,000 miles as preventative maintenance?

First of all it's not dirt, it's all just sediment from the crappy additives that are in the gas and it's worse with cheaper gasoline. Secondly, it's a little over 2 gallons left when the light comes on, I don't know the exact number b/c my owners manual is home while I'm at school, so someone should just check it out because the exact number is in there.
one time i was trying to find out too. but when it was empty, i filled it up to 12.3 gallons. i didn't even see my light go on before i filled it up. or maybe my light is broken (i have a g3). g3 have 13.2 gallon capacity.
does anyone know how to check to see if the gas light work?
