Default Engine removal - possible from top?

The search isnt working and the engine swap guide links are to a dead site.

In my Haynes manual it says it is recommended the engine and tranny be removed as a unit from underneath the car. This is for a 98 CL which is built on the 97 Accord chassis. I do not have the appropriate equipment to do this. Is it possible to remove the engine and transmission as a unit from the top? Or, is it possible to remove the tranny and lift just the engine out the top?

it's fine to do either out the top or bottom. I wouldn't seperate the tranny and engine then remove engine from the top, that seems like more work than it's worth. Just go out the top or bottom. I've never done it by taking it out from the bottom though I've been told it's easier. To go in and out through the top, you have to angle the engine/tranny assembly so you don't hit the sides of the engine bay as it's coming out.

take it out the bottom it is MUCH easier. just put the car on jack stands, lower the engine to the ground with the engine hoist, then use the hoist to lift the car high enough to drag the motor out.

you will have trouble with clearing A/C lines and power steering going out the top.

not at all. I've pulled the motor on my 98 through the top once and out the bottom twice. the bottom is 1000x easier.

I pulled a friend's motor out through the top, but then I went through the bottom when I needed to pull my own motor out. I completely agree with notoriousB in that it's SOOO much easier dropping the motor through the bottom.

Well, I pretty much ripped out the AC and power steering lines cause all I care about salvaging is the engine and tranny. Based on feedback I will probably try the bottom though. Thanks.

When accords are built on the assembly line, the engines go in from underneath. Thats probably why its much easier dropping out the engine and tranny that way.
