Glad you had fun out there! I was running in SM with the black EG.
Most everyone will give you Dave's advice of just run what you have and save the mods and tires for later. You can learn alot still on your street tires and save your money so you can attend as many practices and championships as you can. R-compounds can mask alot of bad habits and mistakes too which is not good for someone who wants to improve their driving skill.
Hey Dave, you going to autocross your car anytime?

Hey will!
I won't be running anything anytime soon.....
I pulled the motor out of my hatch time to rebuild....see your PM...
95redEG6:
Seriously...... spend your money on entry fees and track time.
This is one thing that you will make you faster than anything.
I can regularly beat ferraris, lambos, evos, etc ..... not because my car is fast or has mAd W!ckeD Partz, but because I have more seat time than these guys.
I'm sure that once they come a few more times, they too will be kicking my ***.
$250 spent on 10 practice days will make you much better than $250 spent on tires
Tire may take seconds of your laps now... but seat time will take also take off seconds off your time..... then once you have gotten as fast as you can on street tires, then you can get better tires and take even more time off..
But it DOESN"T work in the other direction. you will just waste money on tires and still get whooped by guys on street tires. Watch the STS group, those guys are fast on street tires.
Once you can regularly beat the top guys in that group, then you *might* think about getting new tires.

well thanks for all the input....i was just getting frustrated that i couldnt plant down and take the line i wanted....the thing is though i work at a tire shop and get tires at cost...so that reallly wouldnt be problem....and i also wanted to save the my tires i have because i daily drive it 60 miles a day...so any more input would be great....bsclywilly your hatch was quick.i heard it was supercharged b series...hope to see you guys in april
here's how to save your tires...
Don't buy expensive ones.
Don't run aggressive alignments.
Keep your toe set to stock.
Toe out = worn out tires
if you want another set of tires for th track, fine get another set of STREET Tires
Even if you get tires cheap or free.... Don't run the r-compounds. I called in a lot of favors and got R-compound tires Dirt cheap and then I was addicted to them.
It has COST me WAY more to unlearn how to drive like a moron.
So now... I am back to hard street tires again relearning how to drive.
RESIST THE TEMPTATION until you can regularly kick *** on street tires.

crazydave....i notice that it says you are in temecula....what part may i ask?...and yes i can get r-compounds close to cost....but im not sure that was the point you were trying to get across
Welcome. If you still have the heater and interior in that car then it runs street mod. Good to see new faces and hope you had fun it was a great day for burning money. Don't get discuraged because of those 2.0L super sevens kick my butt every weekend.
+1 on the above advice. Just get to as many events as you can afford without more mods. Get all the practices and fun runs in you can. If you sign up twice, work twice, you can do x runs also. Have fun and just try to drop a little time each run.

you can buy the speed you get from sticky tires if you have the money.
you can't buy the experience of learning how to drive fast on shitty tires, and subsequently becoming a fast driver on good tires without actually experiencing it.
there are some things money can't buy, and the learning experience of your first year of auto-x'ing w/ subpar equipment is one of those things.
try not to think of things in terms of "my car should be faster than that lunchbox/scion/corolla/dodge colt/ford escort/cavalier" because it's not productive until you're at a high level of skill. at first, think of how much your laps are improving throughout the day. at this point you only compare yourself to other drivers to get a general idea of how much you're improving: i.e. "i was 12 seconds slower than george douganis at the last event, and at this one i was 6 seconds slower".
other than that, soak up as much info as you can from the drivers around you. if you're in the LA region there are plenty of very fast and helpful/nice people who are always willing to give guidance.

Good advice...especially about comparing your times to other cars rather than drivers.
I agree that R comps can mask good driving. Street tires make a lot of noise when pushed to their limits which helps you learn what your car is doing. R comps don't do this and you could go off course pushing your car too hard. R comps + novice driver pushing his/her car to hard = dangerous. This is more true on the roadcourse than AutoX however.
This upcoming season will be my 8th year AutoXing so I'm actually going to get a set of R comps for one of my cars. I think I'm finally ready. LOL

Another good idea when thinking af changing the car to make it faster is to have an experienced driver drive your car for one run. It usually put everything into perspective real quick. It usually goes something like this "I'm 5 seconds off the average pace for my class, I should buy part XX to make me faster" then after top driver from your class drives your car "My car is only 1 second off pace with the top driver piloting it, I need to work on my driving"
All good advice here.
When I started AX...I quickly realized that driving skill was the most important variable and having someone else drive my car was quite an eye opener.

well then it is settled im running street tires next event.....ima have my two buddies drive my hatch...they both been doing it for quite some time.....hopefully i wont be too shamed...lol...thanks everyone.
one of my most humbling moments, is when my friend, who has never drivin my car, who had not even driven or ridden on that auto-x track, after I had 6 + laps, drove my car and BEAT my fastest time on his first lap!!
Damn him... damn him to hell!

was this the event at qualcomm? I was at the BMW autocross there on sat when the scca qualifiers were also going on. It was my first time too and it was a lot of fun. For the BMW one there is one class for all non BMWs so it was hard to judge how my time was. I am addicted now and can't wait until the next event on march 31
