Default Honda newbie

Hi all,

My folks just gave me their 99 CRV ex. It has 110K on it, and I will admit they are not known for their fantastic maintenance schedule. It is getting an oil change, new spark plugs, and some other fluid flushes. Here is where I get into it.

On the drive out here my dad told me he heard 2 loud pops. After popping the hood it turns out that the belt to the AC compressor snapped, and the bolt for the PS tensioner snapped off.

Thankfully the tensioner managed to not get lost even though the car was driven and additional 800mi.

I need to remove the bolt from the block first. Is there a way to do it without dropping the engine?

What is my engine model?

What maintenance would you all suggest. There are some other small issues that I need to deal with but I want to tackle the large one first. Oh yeah, the crank pulley is wobbly at idle, I am really concerned that I could have crank cancer.

FWIW, I am not a numbskull. I just sold my SHO, and if anyone knows about them, they are not the simplest to work one, especially my 99.

I did search the forum but could not find what I was looking for, other than that I think my engine is a B20.

Thanks,

Josh

Your engine is a B20, and the CRV is a LOT easier to work on than that Taurus. It's completely possible to replace the belt tensioner without removing the engine. Gotta ask yourself why the belt and the bolt snapped, though.

I am, unfortunately, leaning toward crank cancer. i could barely get my hand down there to grab the tensioner. I know I am going to need a reverse tap set to get the broken bolt out.

I will say that 110K in Chicago probably isn’t helping the case.
Also is there a rear drum to disc conversion for the CRV

And thanks for the engine info I am convinced I have a B20z

It turns out that the belts were OEM, and the only belt that is left is the one driving the altenator and that one is slip in two are some parts. new belt is going on at some point tonight.

Aside from fluids, plugs, and belts is there anything else I should be looking at?

thanks

If it's a 1999, you have a B20Z2 engine.

for the rear disc conversion, i've heard that if you have a fwd and not awd, you can use swap in prelude rears (although i've no idea which parts you actually need).

maintanence wise, you should have check your valves to make sure they're in spec, usually you should check every 20k miles or so...if not you might get a valve seated or worse

if you hear a rubbing noise when you turn full lock (or almost full lock) you should change your rear differential fluid ONLY with honda dual pump fluid, not any other brand

if you have more questions, there are lots of info here and on hondasuv.com
