Default ITR on the track for the first time. Need question answered.

First of all, the experience was awesome. The track was about 1.20 sec. long (for me at least, about 1.10 for the NSX and 1.13 for a lancer Evo 6) I am not an experienced track driver. Easily beat Nissan 200 SX Turbos and almost hung with a 300ZX twin turbo.

I finally got to see the Type R shine. My favourite comment from people after my laps were: "There is no Turbo??" (ITR's are rare in my country)

Anyways, I also noticed a few weak spots in the ITR. Mine is completely stock and I only have a DTM muffler and KN filter.
My first session lasted 8-10 minutes and everything was fine until I started pushing it and braking late (funny how you get so comfortable after a few laps)
I guess brakes got hot, but I noticed a slight steering wheel shake under hard braking. On my second session, the shaking was severe, or at least mutch worse than on the first session. (2 hours apart) What happened to the brakes?

Driving home later that evening, the shake was gone, but brakes seemes worse then before.

I really thought the ITR brakes could stand the few laps I put down. What can I do to prevent this in the future? Found that braking on the track is much more important than power, at least on this track. Changing brakefluid to grade 5, will that help?

Thanks for any advice, and IF you haven't taken the R to the track, you should sell your car and get something less special. Man I had a big grin on my face that day.

Sounds like hot spots/warping of the rotors. Might have boiled the fluid a little since the brakes are not as strong.

Resurface he rotors and get some better front brake pads (Hawk, porterfield, carbotech)

the brakes are fine for track days , you just need better pads

also a good flush with some hi-temp brake fluid would help

Now you know how important brakes are!!! You need better brake pads (in Europe, get the Ferodos). Stock pads will only work for 3-4 laps without cooling down. And change the brake fluid before the track event (use Super DOT4).

For more laps, make brake ducts with 60 mm dryer hoses!!!

What is the grading on the brake fluid again (1-5?) and units?

Did I get wharped disks if they were fine driving home.
What are "hot spots?"

a hot spot would be a place you do not get as strong of a bite on the rotors due to heat which is the only thing that comes to mind as to why some of the problem went away on the way home.

also be sure you NEVER put on the emergency brake after coming off the track and preferably park your car and roll it back and forth ever minute or 2 for a few minutes.

Super DOT 4 is the best!

Cool your brake discs during the IN lap (the last lap when you're planning to go back to the pits) by not using the brakes during the whole lap!!!

This is the best statment ever posted on Honda-Tech.

I would
-inspect the front rotors for warpage.
-flush the brake fluid with a better fluid
-invest in a better quality front brake pad (the rears are fine for now)

Good luck and enjoy driving your ITR.

-who got a laugh out of the 'turbo' statement...

A track that is 1min 20sec long is very 'tight' and does not allow for good brake cooling.

I used the paddock for cooling the brakes by driving circles slowly.
Never use DOT5 fluids with ITR brake system!!!

Replace the pads with some higher temp compound pads (hawk blue, carbotech panther plus, etc) and run some good fluid in it (ATE Superblue (oh yeah, out of production , ford truck HD (probably not available where you are), castrol lma or motul (if you like spending money)). Make sure that you don't just park the car in between sessions, move it around every few minutes until the brakes are cooled down and don't use the parking brake.

Brakes start fading, then the tires start getting gummy.

Always watch tire pressures b/c they will elevate very high.

You'll see how squirmy the stock suspension as it is pushed at the limit.
