Default Wheel width Preferences

I am looking at new wheels for the track/auto-x. I have my choice of 15x6.5 and weigh 12 lbs or 16x7 that weigh 13.5 lbs. IS the extra .5" worth the added diameter? I figure the extra .5" advantage will be lost in the additional weight of the wheel as well as the additioanl weight of the tire.

Also I have a set of Millenia wheels that are 15x6 and just under 12lbs so it it worth jumping to the 6.5 wheel?

input please. . .

Which tires go with those rims? If you put Hoosiers, then even 15x6" Mazda would be a good choice.

In autoX, I guess every weight you can save is time saved, so my vote is for 15x6.5"

they would be Azenis tires for STX or Kumho V700's for SM. Kinda leaning towards STX. Both tires would be in a 205 size and appropriate aspect ratio.

I wondered if you'd be leaning toward STX over SM...

I voted for the 15x6.5, because of the weight issue, which you know all too well.

Any chance you can hold out for 15x7s? I've got the Azenis on a great set of loaner wheels (15x7 SSRs -- thanks to "you know who" out there!) and they perform amazingly. The Azenis sidewalls are unbelieveably stiff and a pretty tight fit on the 15x7s. These tires are sooo much bigger than their advertised size. Also, you'd have less sidewall flex and get away with running lower psi with 7" wide wheels vs. 6.5". It's actually kind of scary how little tire pressure the Azenis require. At my first event I tried running 37 psi all around and could definitely feel the fronts slipping out from under the car. Now I've found good results with running 34 psi front, and 39 psi rear, and I might even try a pound or two lower up front for the next event.

I just realized I can get Kosie K1's in 15"x7" that weigh 13 lbs that cost me about the same as Rotas. Might be a plan . . .

who is "you know who"? and The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards 15x7 kosies cause I don't have bank like Neo to get SSR's and some Azenis.

Sounds like a great plan! The Kosei K1 has got to be one of the best values out there for our cars...

Trey, I own both (cept 4 lug of course) and both are strong. I've mounted r-compound tires and wide 205's (azenis aren't the only ones like that) to both sets and have never had any problems.. personally I use the rota's on the street cause they are cheaper to repalce if stolen.. and I'm amazed at their strength.. 45 degree angle hit at ~40mph = very very very slightly bent rota running 195-50-15s.. speaking of that, 195-50-15 s-03's are damn strong tires.. they didn't blow out, bubble, etc from that impact where as a P-700Z blew out the sidewall on a 15 mph pothole hit before and bent the **** out of the OEM wheel.

Let me clarify, these great wheels were loaned to me, i.e., I did not pay one penny for them, until said owner would like to have them back. Do you honestly think the wifey would authorize a $1,300 expenditure for wheels, given everything else we need to spend $$$ on.

Yes, it was someone local, and has asked to remain nameless to protect his identity. This person wants to avoid the constant barage of requests to sell these babies and, no, it's not Chris.

Ed, glad to hear you finally got yours on. I've been real happy with mine, and no clearance or rubbing issues to speak of. And damn, those suckers are wide!

Yupper!
The tires don't seem as loud any more, either.

Those SSR's are probably 15 X 7.5.
Just put mine on last night with fresh 032R's for the expo.
Zyg~ actually, they're 15x7s, with a +42mm offset. Amazingly, I've not experienced any "rub" problems (yet) with that offset.
