88 power steering rack

88 power steering rack
greetings,
I'm changing out a power steering rack on a 88LS. Any tips on getting off the ball joints? I'd rather not use a pickel fork as they tend to rip the boots and I don't have the factory tool. Unfortunately the rack ball joint is not spring loaded like the CV joint!
Oh, already tried the 3inch gear puller from Kragen... What piece of _____!

Beat the area without hitting the ball joint, joint threads with a 2lb sledge.
No luck....
Any other ideas before I get fed up and call the Hooptie Heaven?
