Default few question

1. whats the main purpose of the egr.. explain all the parts and where its located.
2. higher octane gas means that the gas can take more heat before it preignites.. so running higher octange is a better chance that if ur car do overheat so it won't detonate..
3. what causes the pinging and knocking noise that sounds like theres rocks being thrown around.

4.. which is the input shaft.. i'm assuming transmission because it has the shaft that need to go into the flywheel.. so the engine is the output shaft..

5.. if i remember correctly the throwout bearing just ***** on the input shaft.. so when i push the clutch does the clutch cable( i don't know the correct term.. does it push the input shaft away from the engine so that the shaft is no longer inside the flywheel hole?

6. i know what a pcv valve do but if it doesn;t work what happens now... all the extra fuel gets stuck in the crankcase and get contiminated with the oil and now what?

7. i took pcv valve out while car running and it doesn't smell like strong gasoline at all.... and rpm rised to about 1100rpm any reasons why?

i tried searching these up but the howstuff works is using big word.. and is to technically for me.. so if anyone can explain it a bit better thanks...

i love messing around with my car and learning new things sorry if this seems 2 long gonna try stuff to learn them..

Search button is your friend but ill just explain the EGR.

EGR is the Exhaust Gas Return. basically whats its doing is....actually go here
CLICK ME that will explain i search one for you, 1/7 done. goodhunting =D

no the input shaft does not move, the Clutch is basically a pressure plate that allows the transmission to separate from he engine.
well here --> CLICK ME they show diagrams and everything he agian happy huntings

simactive got # 1 and #5 for ya
heres the rest
#2 you are partially right here. higher octane fuel allows for more advanced ignition timing. it gives a smoother flame front across the piston. the excitability level of the atoms in say 94 octane is much lower than 87 octane. this means it can be squeezed much more (higher compression) before it gets to the point of self combustion. higher compression = more power. this also plays a part with your #3 question about ping and knock. Knocking and pinging result when the fuel/air mixture self-ignites somewhere else in the cylinder, away from the spark plug. this self ignition can be caused be carbon build-up/deposits on the piston. carbon tends to hold a lot of heat. In these cases, the combustion from each source burns toward the other until their leading edges literally collide, causing the ping or knock sound. Severe cases, termed detonation, result in a knock. Pinging is just a quieter symptom from a lesser instance of the same phenomenon.

#6&7... if the pcv is clogged than yes the gas fumes will be trapped in the crankcase. this can then lead to deterioration of the oil, causing it to lose its lubricity. as far as your idle is concerned, it seems that it was a vacuum leak of some kind, however ive never seen em do that.
