Default Need Help IDing Drivetrain Noise

92 Accord - manual trans. At 40 mph and up is making a thumping sound. It will make this sound with the engine in neutral, so its not engine related. No vibration is felt in the steering wheel or else where, but the sound is definetly coming from the front end. Final clue, if I go around a right turn it will stop, left turn it continues. I'm guessing left drive axle, wheel bearing, or the bearing supporting the shaft between the left axle and the transmission. Any input would be much appreciated.

Ummm do you mean not Transmission related? That most possible could be your CV JOints, the outer end of it, the ballbearings are almost dead. if its what im thinking about. Check for tears in the rubber boot also give it the Squeeze test, if you see air or hear air coming out then change it becuase most likely something got in there.

Thx for your reply. I meant not engine related, I figure even with the clutch in the wheels are still turning the transmission, so I didn't want to rule that out (although I sure hope that its not the transmission). I just did the right axle, but the left one is original and there is a bit of leakage around the inside cv boot at the inner end. Do you agree that if the noise goes away turning right that it has to be the left side? I thought a bad outer CV joint made clicking noises when turning, under acclereration, at least the right one did before I replaced it. No such noise now, just this weird thumping sound at speed.

bu thumping sound do u mean a vibration? rubbing? clicking? if its clicking i would look more twards the cv joint, it its more of a rubbing or vibrating sound i would look at the wheel bearings, thats what was wrong with my car when it started making a vibrating and rubbing sound

also, if it does it in a right hand turn it would be the right hand side, and vise versa

It sounds like a vibration, but you can't actually feel it, you can just hear it. The sound is there going straight down the road and when going around a left curve, but goes away going around a right curve. I'm really stumped, because it isn't obvious what side the sound is coming from, so please keep those responses coming before I end up rebuilding the whole front end.

jack the car up and let the wheels spin. A wheel bearing will make a high pitched squeel at speed, and it isnt affected by turning. A balljoint or tie rod will make 'clunking' sounds when you go over bumps, or make turns. Most likly one of your axels is gone. Like stated before, the u joint inside the CV boot is probably toast. Let the wheels spin on jack stands and see which one makes noise.
