Hey,
I drive a '90 Civic Si - The tranny has been making all sorts of grinding noise ever since i bought it. Not the type of grinding such as gears grinding; not metal on metal, but more of a weird vibrational revving sound.
I'm thinking that it's perhaps not my transmission, but instead my shifter, and that the bushings are shot so it rattles, but i could be wrong. When I move the shifter slightly left and right, (not changing gears), it makes a different and skewed sound, such as the alterations of sound you hear when you cup your ear... kind of.

Any ideas? All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Daytime bump

 

My shifter used to vibrate when it hit my exhaust pipe. This was due to bad bushings and may be your issue.

if you are saying there is a lot of play when you move it side to side, I'd say it's your bushings

 

have you jacked up the car and looked. if something is wrong it should be pretty obvious tothe naked eye.

we cant fix your problems if you dont try yourself first.

 

I understand that,
but by chance, on the vast plains of the internets, perhaps someone, has had a similar problem as I do now.
Therefore, perhaps that someone may care to explain to me how he/she has fixed this problem.
