my engine is goin out on me it has been rebuilt once and done crapily, there are about 180,000 miles on thte block. 2 cylinders have rings goin out.
it has a gude head, cam, intake manifold, ecu, and an underdrive pulley
i dont know if i can afford a b16 so i was thinkin a d16z6, would i be happy w/ this engine? should i just do another rebuild on my current motor?
any suggestions are appreciated

i think u'll be very happy considering how bad ur current motor sounds
hey its an easy install and it should take about a day and a half if this is ur daily driver car and u want 2 get it in the road quick and cheap go for it

it all depends how u define happy. if u want a performance oriented motor then u might not be as happy as saving for a b16 or something of that sort. but from what it sounds like your old motor was jacked so i might be happy with a motor that runs well and has decent performance. it all depends what u r looking for in your car. good long term high tune motor - prob not. great daily driver with good power and reliability - yep.

the compression in my pistons is 151, 137, 151, 130. im just wondering if it will be faster than my engine was b4 the rings started goin out. what will i be lookin to spend on a d16z6 swap?
well, i want sompthin as fast or faster than my current motor was, i just dont what to go w/ a slower motor, im leavin for college next semester so i need sompthin reliable. i just dont want to be dissapointed.

Man, with a Gude head package, you should be really fast. I mean a racing head, cam, intake manifold, and underdrive pulley should combine to give you alot more HP than a stock D16Z. Or maybe your engine is just holding on to it's last breathe.

Dunno what motor you had, but I recently picked up a '90 Hatch with a Z6 in it.
I guess 'Peppy' would best describe it. Haven't made any timed runs, but, it'll pull pretty hard thru' all gears with the Si trans when you get above 3k. It's great on gas, and I can take any Stock i/h/e Civic with it.
I think you'll be happy with it. You ever want more speed, you can always boost the biatch.

those are pretty low compression #'s...i mean damn. that thing is tired. i think in its prime, that d16a6 with the gude work would seriously embarass a stock d16z6. so to answer your q..i do NOT think you will be happy. i don't mean to sound harsh..but i went from a stock d16a6 to a stock d16z6 and felt like the a6 was FASTER. i was so pissed.
it's more money than the d16z6, but you can find b18a's and b18b's for really cheap. i've seen them for as low as $375 for the longblock at local junkyards. i bet that is what a d-series longblock would cost you as well (at a junkyard
).
im sure u could find a b18a/b, ls tranny, and ecu for $1000. i would save for that. yes u have to get mount kit, axles, etc..but IMHO u should drive that d16a6 until its dead and save your pennies for the b swap. im not tryin to be a sell out, because i own both d and b series motors, and personal experience says go b.

That's what i was saying. A D16a6 with a complete Gude head package would absolutely kill a stock Z6. I guess your engine is in very bad shape, that's why it's so slow. I also have the D16a6 with just the basic bolt ons and it's pretty quick. Obviously it's a joke compared to anything with heavy modifications but it's pretty quick. I can't imagine how much faster it would be with a racing head, port matched TB and intake manifold along with a racing cam. That would really make it fast. And that's what you have with the Gude package but like i said it's probably in really bad shape.
I really think the D16a6 engine is underrated in the 108 HP numbers. I've seen a few dynos of the stock engines and they are dynoed right around 100 HP to the wheels. I don't know, maybe it's just coincidence.

you're right. d16a6's are totally underrated. they are awesome motors. if i were building a sick d-series, i would use the d16a6 as my foundation.
