Default 1996 Honda Civic with 170k miles

It's a LX edition with 170,000 miles.

What should I be worried about when going to look at it? I know CV joints start to crick...but what are some of the general maint. that these things will need around that age? ...btw it's an Automatic too.

It looks great for a Minnesota car, the guy only wants 2.5k for it as well.

Is this just a money pit?

I origonally was looking for a 96ish VW Jetta GLX VR6....but I have not found anything and am desperate and this thing flew by me....any thoughts for when I go look at it? ???

Ive only got about 2500 to spend .

what should I keep away from ? The DX models? Automatics? Bad/Good years?

BTW the VW's have a lil more kick then most of these honda's do...so I decided Ill grow up and save some gas , so here I come Honda!

Plus these suckers last forever.

id be a little worried about the piston rings going bad, as that seems to happen to me. but that isn't something you can really look at when checking out the car.

stay away from automatics, they aren't as fun.

too far . I am in Minnesota.

Bah, piston rings...those are nasty to check.

What's it cost to get them replaced if need be?

It's an automatic...I am desperate.

EDIT : eg-6hatchback I am not allowed to reply to IMs
