Hey all,

I have a 1986 Accord LXi hatchback that died on me while I was on the road yesterday. I'd been driving for about 30 mins and the engine cut out on me right in the middle of the street. There weren't any weird noises when it happened either it just went all quiet all of a sudden.

I pulled it over to the curb and tried to start it again but now it won't start. It sounds like the starter is engaging the engine but the engine just doesn't catch.

Anyone have any ideas?

 

Without anymore information, I would guess coil/ignitor. Check for spark.

 

Open the oil cap and be sure the cam is turning, so you'll know the timing belt is intact.
Check for spark at the plugs.
You can check for fuel pressure by barely opening the 'test' bolt on the fuel filter, and crank the car. Have rags handy to catch the gas spray.
Those TEK brand rotors in the dist. had a bad reputation for shorting the spark to ground, and not sending it out to the plugs.

i had some suggestions from other people that the distributor might be shot. what's your opinion on that? do you know of a good place to get a replacement?
