Default PCV question: to remove or not to remove?

You know the tube that runs from the intake to the back of the valve cover? Is that a crucial part, or can you put a breather filter on the valve cover and cap off the hole in the intake and call it good?

yeah i was just wondering because the tube is designed so there is an active vacuum (air being sucked from the valve cover), and taking that tube away means taking that vacuum away, and i was wondering if that was detrimental to anything in the engine.
