Minor engine build, ECU options and inspection questions
I'd like to tear into my motor this year to deal with an oil comsumption problem and give it a little extra kick. The only problem I run into is the OBD2 emissions scan test we have here. My ITR is subject to this test and if it fails by throwing codes/CEL I cannot buy insurance.
My plan is to rebuild the bottom end with forged pistons and rods and use an LS crank. Up top would sit some "A" spec cams with upgraded springs. Motor is an internally stock USDM B18C5 with all the bolt-ons. I currently run a Hondata/P28 set-up now which I will continue to use after this build. However, I'm not sure how the stock ECU would react to it come inspection time.
So my question is "How far can I go with an engine build and still have the option of running my stock ECU for the inspection and not have it throw any codes?"

Sounds like a mild build. I would suspect this should not be a issue. Stage 1 cams typically have the same non-vtec lobes as a type r. If your compression is in the neighborhood of 11:5 to 12:1, I can't see why this would be much different that stock out of vtec.
The only way your stock ecu is not going to throw any codes when it comes to inspection time is if all of your factory sensors/cat are retained as they were before.

So having said that, does this mean that I can run whatever set-up I like, within reason? I don't plan on changing any sensors and I have a 2.5 high flow cat with an o2 bung. Should I be ok running 11.5 CR and Pro+1 cams?
