I just need some advice from someone who has done this before. My prelude sterio head unit is on its last legs and needs to be replaced so I was thinking about updateing to something nice. I am not really interested in doing a big system with subs and amps, I just want to keep the current 7 speaker setup. Anyway I was told by a local radio store that my car had a special setup with its speakers and if I put a new stereo in it would not run out of all 7 speakers, only the two 6" rears and the two 6" fronts leaving the middle rear 6x9 and the front tweeters off. He told me that there might be a way to do it, but the system has special amplifiers in it now and it would cost $100 in labor to set it up like that. Anyway I just want to know from someone who has successfully swapped out their head unit for an aftermarket one and what they had to go through to make it run all 7 speakers correctly. Kinda fell like I am being feed a line from the store.
Thanks.
Thanks.
There is an "adapter" that you can use, something like this... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...=SLC4 but I would just get the harness adapter... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...HA08B , [as you will need it anyway] and connect up to an aftermarket HUs harness, [use the aftermarket HUs amp control lead not the power ant. control lead] plug it in and see what works, be careful with the volume it may get loud very quickly, [low volume setting on aftermarket HU] if thats the case get the adapter I linked you to and use the RCA outputs of the aftermarket HU, [make sure the HU you get has 2 sets of RCAs, front and rear]

It's a 95 prelude V-tech
That doctor site is cool, but only talks about the left and right rear and the left and right front. Does not mention the tweeters or the rear 6x9, I want to make sure sound comes from those as well.

The tweeters will be in parallel with the front speakers, and the sub, [6x9 amped speaker, picks up signal from both front and rear speakers, [non fading].
As I said, no matter what system is in there you will need the harness adapter, so just get it and try it, you can't hurt anything, just make sure the HU you get has front and rear RCA outputs, even better if it also has a sub out.

Ok, thanks guys, so the harness adapter is all I need? Why do I need the RCA outs (most good units come with them anyhow) if I am getting the harness adapter, doesn't the speaker wires go to that?

Awwww,
you didn't read my first post.
"be careful with the volume it may get loud very quickly, [low volume setting on aftermarket HU]" if speaker level input is too high, you will 'over-saturate" the input stage of the OEM amp, volume will be very loud with poor SQ, even though the volume setting on the HU is low, if that's the case then you need a line level adapter, the one I linked, "something like this" only has the speaker level inputs, and you can use it to match the input and output levels, the next step up in an adapter will also have RCA inputs, and the unit is actually a "line amp" and is only needed if the HUs speaker outputs are too high and the HUs RCA outputs are too low, I have also just cut a set of 1' RCA patch cords into 2 sets of RCA to speaker level adapters, connect cut ends of RCAs the harness adapters speaker leads and try that, if volume level is too low, us the cheaper line level adapter I linked you to or find the more expensive line amp.
