Default ZC troubles; pls read

ZC really isn't running all that good. Maybe you guys can help me with this-
my idle sticks around 2500- 1500. I think this is because I'm using the DX throttle (too long) cable because I can get the idle to drop down by bringing the gas pedal towards me with my foot. I've been told to get a 88(89?) teg throttle cable, but there are no junk yards around here and i dont know where else to find one. Is it possible to take out the DX throttle cable and shorten it.

it also drops down to like 700 then back up to 2500-1500. (up and down, up and down). It did this before because the idle was set to high. I adjusted the idle to 750 and it was fine for a couple of weeks, but now its doing it again. The idle screw is all the way down. The car also smokes a little when doing this.

Gas mileage is extremely shitty. I think i'm getting around 160-190 to full tank.
Any help would be great.

If all else fails you can get a throttle cable from Majestic Honda. It runs around $16, which isn't to bad. You may also be able to get one from your local dealership as well.

this should be happening because your fast idle valve has gone bad. it is located on the back of the left side of the intake manifold. remove the coolant hoses that are attached and the wiring plug, and i believe it is held on by 2 (10) millimeter bolts. most other D series fast idle valves should be replaceable.

alright great. Should i get the teg throttle cable or just go ahead and get an SI throttle cable?

That fast idle control valve? is that the same thing as the eavc? coolant filter thing on the back of the intake manifold w/ 2 coolant hoses and a green plug?

Do i have to get a new one at a junkyard or dealer (are they expensive), or could i just take mine off and clean it out.

thanks,
Joe

wow, this forum moves pretty fast. Really need to know this soon, cuz i'm going to be leaving school in a little bit and wanna get this stuff done.

My car has been running like this for a while now, being driven daily a lot. Is it hurting anything?

I think the SI cable works. I am pretty sure that is what the shop (where I did the wiring for a ZC) used. Are you throwing any codes?

What does throwing codes mean?

The Si cable will work - I reused my existing EX cable when I did my ZC swap & have had no problems.

by the way i dont think the 88-89 teg cable will work...i got one for mycar when my old one snapped and it was tooooo short!!! so go with the sic able it will work fine....and the idle could be caused by a vacuum leak or vacuum lines could be wrong....so id check that too......good luck!

I don't think the cable's the problem. Check your catalytic converter. If its clogged, you will experience all of the symptoms you mentioned (eratic or fast idle, hesitation under accelleration, and shitty gas mileage)

i'd say its either your idle control thingy, or a vacuum leak. check out your throttle body to manifold gasket. spray some injector cleaner around the mating surfaces and see if the motor responds.

Are you getting any CEL ( check engine lights) ???????? on your ECU???

Why not un hook your cable and see if that makes a diff.

alright, i shortened my DX throttle cable and I think it worked. When i start it up it goes to 2000 but within a second or 2 drops down to about 1200 (cold) when warm it idles pretty good right around 750.

weird thing is -
When i'm accelerating at certain times (usually in 2nd and 3rd) I hear this loud ringing/ long tone under the hood. its crazy sounding.

i'm gonna replace the rest of my vacuum lines with new hosing and see if that does anything.

I think my cat may be going bad. Every once in a while (very very rarely), my car smells like rotten eggs or something after driving it kinda hard.

** no CEL , but it did come on once while sitting at the drivethrough. (Didn't check the code). Shut the car off and started it back up and it hasn't happened since.
