Hey guys I have been looking at turbo parts for some time wondering what would be the best way to go. I was curious about a dyi turbo manifold.

Who has welded up there own?
how has it help up?
pics?
hp? if possible

If you cant weld or know someone who can weld dont try it. Its HARD AS HELL. You have to cut, position, and weld everything and it takes alot of time if its your first time. Its a cool project, but if your doing it to save money, your better off buying a manifold.

it's not hard as hell

A preschool level education is all you need to cut and weld a log manifold.

Practice welding before going at a manifold if you haven't done much welding first.

i've built 3 manifolds; well 4 but one was a prototype that turned out like ****; 2 logs and a mig'd ramhorn. I have a big *** tig now but haven't even got to use it on a functional project.

Hard, depends on how much you know about welding and what tools you have.

I wouldn't go that far, specially with the way stainless reacts to temps. Normal person might sit down an not take warpage into consideration which will result in a wasted manifold. There are precautions your normal Joe won't take and possible mess up, then again your average Joe should not really have a tig, or a mig welder or tools to cut metal.

The one thing about the diy kits out there is, they forget to tell you ( mostly with the log kit ) that you do have to cut the metal.

i mig'd my own log manifold out of mild steel and BMC mild flanges. wasnt the prettiest, but held up damn well. almost 2 years and tons of abuse and not a single crack. it has since been sold along with my old turbo kit though...

heatwrap made it actually look decent. HMT for life!

 

price depends on where you get your parts, what kind of rod you use (assuming you have your own welder), etc.
the flange is roughly $50
the steel is roughly $70-$150
wastegate flange $25
turbo flange $30
plus rod and time

you can get a pretty decent log manifold for $200-$350

it takes roughly 14 90* bends to make a ramhorn. Ace Stainless sells 90* sch 40 stainless elbows for like $6.** each, which comes out to $87 total.

in for welding the t's and elbows together 1st then realizing it doesn't match up with the flange!

haha, i can have an engineering degree but it won't hold a candle to experience

 

if you have an engineering degree and you cant figure out how to weld up a log i would like to know where you got it.....it doesnt say GED on it does it????........

Here's a good example of education vs experience: try making a 720hp small-block v8 with a carb, all-motor, no power-adders.

There's actually some guys who do it who, at best, have a GED. There are many factors in welding, and none of them can be ALL predicted, at least not easily and cheaply. Experience will 'pwn' knowledge every time.

 

we do that but ours run around 650.....dirt track stuff methanol 12.5/1 comp lumpy cams and the kicker we can only use 2barrel holley 500 carbs no teardowns unless sumthing is wrong motors last all season

 

ha, went i used to go to the track with my father, he ran 358's 9.0:1 with a 4 barrel on alcohol... supposedly they made ~500hp. i drove the car once in warmups, and it was fast as ****! but that was a long time ago, so i dont know how it would feel at the moment.

are you using "spec" motors that have to be sealed?

 

Its not easy at all to make a manifold that is PROPERLY welded and fitted. Here are some of my first few manifolds ive done. I've made over 150 manifolds now and keep cranking as we speak. Manifolds shown in pics are my ramhorn in my teg, d series ramhorm, dsm, k20 sidewinder in eg, and two random pics haha.









My new gt4202 and my divided t4

 

no our only restrictions are the 500 two barrel, 355 ci, no dry sump or electric water pumps, stock location rear suspension (no four link, z link, or pullbars) and sraight methanol no nitro or toulune(spell check) there are sealed motors that we can run that use a tpi style fuel system but they are spendy and dont make quite as much horesys... the best race of the year is cheaters day cheaters then we pull out the square bore dominator, i think it flows like 1500 or so

opp pulses....aka cylinders that are 180 deg apart...on a honda we'd pair 1-4 & 3&2

that is what we did on our mani's.(these are 2 differant manifolds/2 diff cars)
