Default Recommended insurance companies for modded R's - NY

I'm currently with Geico and in NY, however their policy doesn't cover any mods done to the car, so if something were to happen to it, I'd only get book value for a stock R, and knowing insurance companies that'll probably be like 13k.

Being as I have a boosted R, I'd like a little more comfort from an insurance company that can cover me for as much as I'm willing to pay for (I'd like to be insured for $20k).

So, I need to know insurance companies in NY that will cover me for the full $20k, not just book value.

Thank you kind sirs

Shop around. The easiest thing to do is to insure your car for a declared value.

progressive also replaces your oem parts with bad fitting aftermarket peices.. shop around i am pretty sure any insurance company will allow you to insure your car for any given amount.. but the price on coverage goes up obviously..

Yea, I thought I would at least have the option with Geico, but apparently not.

What's the story with progressive not using oem parts?

Most insurance companies try to use aftermarket/non OE parts to try and keep their costs down.

Most insurance companies cheap out on replacement parts.

Progressive gets their name from thier rates. They start off cheap and progressively go up every month.

I'm not sure how it works for modified cars, but I know that going back into the '80s, car insurance companies were scared to death of the word TURBO. My aunt and uncle were looking at Mazdas around 1989 and their company would insure a Miata or an RX7 but not a 626 Turbo sedan!

You could look into collector car insurance like Hagarty. I'll have to ask my uncle what he uses on the Porsche.

I think it was Hagerty I checked into once for an ITR, for ***** and giggles. They won't insure anything as young as an ITR, even the 97s. I forget the cutoff age....

Anyone have good luck with State Farm for mods? I have them now for coverage, and will probably use them for an R someday.

i think hagerty does insure cars in our model years. my buddy insures his 89 M3 through them and also his 93 240sx street/drag car.

its under 'exotic & special interest vehicles"

(quoted from hagerty's site for exotic & special intrest vehicles)
"Rare or "limited production" vehicles, model years 1987 or newer, such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Dodge Vipers and Plymouth Prowlers, etc. may be eligible for our exotic and special interest vehicle program. Because these are newer vehicles, Hagerty must ensure that the vehicle is being treated as a collectible and driven on a limited basis."

you just have to call them because the cars are to new to get a quote online(with their online form).

but they offer free quotes it wouldnt hurt to give them a try.

edit: actually i just tried the online form again and put exotic in "modification type" and the quote worked.

actually progressive wont let you insure for set price, just a fixed amount over cars blue book. used to have them, until they started acting shady with me about HPDE's.

state farm or allstate may be two viable solutions. However, these can be expensive, depending on your insurance. I know statefarm covers aftermarket as long as you have receipts. Allstate you may want to ask, but the coverage seems to be as good as statefarm from what i hear.

i pay for insurance through statefarm, with the stipulation i drive less than 5000 miles a year, i get a nifty rate of < $1000 per 6 months

its expensive, but jersey is more

Just got off the phone with progressive, and they don't cover any "engine" mods, only cd /dvd players and/or custom paint jobs....

My R was covered with Allstate in NY, but I have no clue if they would cover mods. I've never heard of any insurance company doing that...

I think someone actually tried it and Hagarty told them that the ITR was not rare enough.

I think what they meant was that the ITR is not "classy" enough to fit their profile.

I heard that Hagarty insured this kid's R, but it seems that he lies enough to become a carpet.
