Default Engine Oil, My observation thus far.

Ok, let me first say that I do NOT want this to be a debate about which oil is better, or if Synthetic is better than Natural. IF it becomes one I ask the mods to close this thread.

When my car was breaking in till up to 10,000 miles, I ran the OEM honda motor oil 5W30. Everything was peachy and although I went through some oil in the beginning when all was brand New. The oil use became less over time and more mileage.

At the 10,000 mark after much investigating and some varied advice from several different mechanics I switched to Mobil-1 5W30 Synthetic.

Soon after the first change, lets say 1,000 miles or so, "And Just so you know I check my oil Every time before my car leaves the driveway" it began to need a little topping off.

More and more often, the car would need a little top off to bring it up to par And after a day at Autocross it would be reading LOW which I expected.

What I did NOT expect was that every time I drove the car spiritedly on the road, when I would park it till next time. I would again check it before I'd take it out and WHAMMO, I would sometimes need from 1/4 to 1/3 quart to get it from low to a little above the low mark.

OK now Fast forward to my last oil change. Just for kicks and because it was on sale AND that the Mobil 1 was Not available at the time in 5W30 I got Castrol Syntec 5W30.

I drove the car a few times and checked each time. No loss.

I drove it yesterday to, at and home from an Autocross about 100 miles total, and guess what? NO LOSS.

So thats just my observation and I have No explanation. I'm as dumbfounded as the next guy. I will monitor the oil for the rest of it's life till the next change and of course let anyone interested know IF there is ANY consumption.

So far I'm pleased, and Surprised since I didn't really plan on changing brands, it was almost an accident.

Good luck to all,

A.

No, and from what I've read the New blend is for higher mileage cars. My R has 21,000 miles on it.

I get minor oil loss with mobil 1 10w-30 after heavy vtec sessions. I read somewhere it's because synthetic is thinner and therefore gets past seals easier and gets burnt up more.

In normal daily driving which i shift just below vtec crossover i get no oil loss at all.
My car has 9500 km btw, switched to mobil 1 at 6000 km

Funny cause my car does the opposite. I have a couple hundred miles on my current oil (mobil 1 10w30) and it hasn't burned a bit. This is with 1 autocross and sprited driving. But I will go to castrol GTX because mobil 1 is way too expensive for me to afford.

I'm having the same thing happen as most people in this thread.

I burned no oil when I was running non-syn. I switched to mobil1 in Jan and now i'm burning a bit of it.

maybe because you were using 10w30 and not 5w30 perhaps?

greyteg, perhaps you drove differently when you were breaking in your car, and when you switched over to synthetic? many variables here. i haven't had any *drastic differences in oil consumption with my car whether it was conventional or synthetic when the weight was similar.

I had the exact same situation. I actually run the Castrol Syntec Blend, which is a great middle of the road (in terms of cost) oil, and I am much happier knowing that I do not burn oil with it. It certainly works for me. I prefer to run 10w30 though in any brand.

Anykinda Mobil that has been available to me my car just drinks it....

5-30, 10-30, 15-50.....

I use to blow smoke rings outta the Zigen 304....

Did leakdown...did comp test...everything is normal..... its appetite for oil has been curbed recently.....

I personally cannot recommend Mobil..... but if it seems to work for you.....then

good observation...
one weird observation i did observe...although i know most people here run synthetic, honda actually has mobil do their oem oil and even sell it through the dealerships...and never had a complaint against it -- so it must be something with the synthetic mixutre that mobil decided to use when compared to the other brands out there...TRUST ME I DON'T WANT TO START A WHOLE NEW 10+ THREAD ON OIL, but i thought it was interesting that factory honda oil is by mobil...that's all

Mobil 1 oil is thinner but protects the same as the thicker oil (thicker oil robs horsepower), so expect it to "burn" faster.

I get the oil changed every 3,750 miles, and the dipstick always reads about halfway between the min. and max. marks between oil changes...so I'm only about 1/2 quart low after nearly 4k miles of HARD driving.

I always VTEC. I never add oil. The oil was last changed at 15k miles and with 17k miles I went to Buttonwillow Raceway and drove 280 miles ON TRACK IN VTEC and didn't lose a drop...

Conclusion: OEM dinosaur oil ownz j00!

I have observed that on every single DOHC VTEC car I know of that runs mobil 1, it needs topping off quite a bit.. and a LOT after any real track use.. on the other hand everyone I know running Castrol GTX has no problems.

-Dave, who just stated facts and tried to avoid which was better, even though it's obvious

Honda oil is best. It's all I use. Mobil1 seems to burn easier than Honda stuff.
(But then again, I pay chump change for it because of where I work!)

And little do you know that the oil that the dealership uses in their $20 oil change is Chevron oil...

The last real test (1GreyTeg) is at your next oil change switch back to Mobil and see if it goes back to burning oil. Then it should be conclusive

How much oil does between the two dots on the dipstick measure? 1 quart?

Asl yourself - "Why is burning bad?" The answer is that it indicates there is something wrong with the engine (rings, seals or ? ) But in and of itself there is nothing wrong with losing a little oil.

So I ask you, if there seems to be nothing wrong with your motor and switching brands changes consumption then what's the harm in using the brand that the car consumes? Nothing IMHO.

Also I think that you should NOT be topping off all the time when you are down 1/4 quart. You should top off when you are st or below the bottom mark on the dipstick but not when you are wityhin the normal range of the stick. I know that when I accidentally overfill that oil gets burned off quickly maybe that's what you are repeatedly doing.

The M1 seems to be more penetrating than other oils and probably gets past rings and is burned off more easily. My advice is - Let it alone until there is a problem.

Regards,
Alan
