your syrchos are going. I have heard of alot of Bseries trannies loosing 3rd. Mine grinds 3rd all the time. Sorry dont know of tranny rebuilders in your area. but you will eventually lose 3rd. Try pressing the clutch in and shift to neutral and let out then press the clutch again and shift into 3rd. Mine doesnt grind if i do this.It is letting your syncros get in line and shift at the roght time.

sounds like you are going through the same synchronizer woes as all of us S1/Y1 owners. You have two options, get another tranny used from someone and risk it grinding too after you bang a few gears. Or find someone who can get the syncro. kit from Japan and have them installed or install them yourself in your tranny. I would choose the latter of the two, they both cost about the same and at least with the new syncros in your tranny, you know what you have. Especially since your tranny is an LSD, its worth putting the money into

i have the Y1 transmission and same problem. i hear both answers from people that it's no big deal, people have shifted for YEARS with grinding. and then others, like here, say it's syncros, and it won't last long. people tell me all trannies from japan suck so i wouldn't doubt if you bought another one it'd do the same thing. but you have LSD, so like he said, it'd be worth it to put money into it i guess.
i've found on my tranny, if i shift SLOW and just hold it in "front" of the gear, it'll suck the shifter in gear in a second. if that makes sense...

****!!! Mine just started doing this a couple of days ago!!! I've never grinded 3rd, if i grind any gears it was 2nd and sometimes 5th. But never 3rd and now out of nowhere my 3rd grinds at high rpms even if i take my time but its a really quiet, quick grind. I know it's the synchros but i was just wondering how it could happen all of sudden when that gear/synchro never seen any damage/wear!!
