I am about to buy an M2b4 from a guy who said he was ocassionally getting a 3rd gear grind. He says he then switched to syncromesh and now it has "disappeared". Is this tranny on its way to needing a rebuild? If so what kind of life expectancy can I expect out of it? Is it worth buying?

I know these are hard questions to answer so please just do you best based on your own personal experiences with transmission.

Should I not worry bout it since it has "disappeared"?

If it grinds with genuine honda MTF then there is a problem with the transmission. I have heard that the syncromesh is just patching a problem and it will get worse or bust all together. Either way Honda MTF ftw.

If you run GM syncromesh, you will not have to rebuild it.

why do you say that? if it grinds even occasionally doesn't that mean something is wrong no matter how or what fluid you use?

Seriously think about it for a second. If it grinds on a regular basis with normal fluid (which a good tranny won't do) it has issues of some sort.

 

it will need a rebuild.

most likely the slider, syncro, and possibly the gear. and you have to buy it from honda as a full assembly per gear.

you really wont know what it needs until you open it up.

so what if we get back to what he is really saying....

It might be okay. I too had a 3rd gear grind aproxx 2 years ago. Took it to a shop and he said nothing was wrong with it, and I haven't had a problem since. Perhaps I was just low on tranny oil. If the tranny is okay with Syncromesh I wouldn't be too worried. I would also make sure I was getting a discounted price though. You might want to look into trying Honda's new MTF, although i guess if it's not broken (with syncromesh) then don't fix it.

if you have the proper fluid in your trans. and its grinding then theres a problem inside, like i have already stated.

you wont know exactly what it needs until you take it apart.

syncromesh will not fix the problem, it may provide a little extra lube but thats it.

fill it w/ honda fluid and if grinds then it needs a rebuild, its that simple.

I would say you need a slider assy. Normally the blocking ring saves the synchros.. its hard to say tho until you tear it apart.

This is very true.
Just try changing your fluid if you havent changed it in a long time. Use Honda MTF, I have used syncromesh and Honda MTF and i have to say i like Honda MTF better.
IF you are looking for a place to get your transmission rebuilt i would recomend gearspeed. I also recommend you upgrade the synchros to the carbon coated synchros.

yes, only diff in the transmissions are jdm come with stock lsd.

 

Isn't the gearing also slightly different in the JDM tranny?

Well it was def well over 2 years ago, prob like 3 or more. I had a bad grind in 3rd gear when quick shifting or high rpm shifts. I had to baby shift it to get it to not grind. I also believe I had a similar issue in 5th gear, but def 3rd. Anyway I was up at school so I took it to a mechanic (big mistake) and ended up replacing the clutch, resurfacing the flywheel etc. He told me he took at look at my 3rd and 5th and he said they were fine, the syncro's etc. Anyway he endedup overcharging the ***** outta me but all grinds have been gone since.

Also probaly about a year and half ago my tranny was starting to mess up. Getting it into any gear was a problem, I had to double clutch every gear. Anyway drove on it like that for a week till I could save the money to get it fixed. Upon inspection I had bent the shift forks and he told me that the last mechanic that was in there didn't know explitive. Anyway he bent them back and my tranny has been fine ever since no grinds. So I'd say the trannies are pretty durable if you do maintain them and give them good fluids. I have about 185K on this tranny so far.
