Gear backlash during engine braking?? Thoughts?
Hey everybody,
First post and brand new to forums in general...recently purchased an '01 Silverstone/Red int. S2000 with 62,xxx...my dream car. Have put about 500 miles on it so far, but am getting a buzzing from the transmission in 2nd-5th during engine braking, especially b/t 3-4k rpm. It sounds a lot like heat shield rattle so I took it to my local Honda dealer. First they said it was "resonance" but I didn't buy it. A more thorough inspection and research and they came up with "Gear backlash" and declared that the problem was common on S2K's like mine and the fix was relatively simple: replace the clutch...any thoughts? I'd appreciate the help.

Technical Service Bulletin: Buzzing clutch upon deceleration. Caused by worn clutch disk springs.
Fix: Replace with 02+ friction disk, resurface flywheel as necesary.
Gear backlash is not a clutch problem. Fire your mechanic.

Thanks for the quick response. It seems they recommended an entirely new clutch disk, pressure plate, and throwout bearing...overkill? At $1,367.xx it's not a cheap fix I suppose...thankfully the dealer took off some because of the buzz. Also, would it be better to replace the stock components with aftermarket street clutch/flywheel now or replace with OEM?
They're ripping you off.
$550 for all the parts including a new flywheel, so 1360 - 550 = $800 in labor?

From: TRILLINOIS....WAY downtown, jerky.
They're not ripping you off. Dealers charge between $45-$90 per hour of labor. If the books say that this is a 10hr job...then thats what they charge you. Plus you might be getting parts at a wholesale price sometimes even if it is from a dealer. The dealer the OP went to might not have been selling wholesale parts. Im not saying its a reasonable price or that you should pay it..im just saying that they're not "ripping you off". Thats just what they charge. ripping you off would be charging $400 for the whole thing, quoting you more, and pocketing the rest as a 3rd party or something else deceptive. They're not decieving you...they just charge more.
Bottom line: GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! lol. buy the parts wholesale and get them installed at somewhere else. Make sure its reputable. One of the advantages of going with dealers is that you get a pretty bulletproof warranty, and they use "genuine honda" stuff to put your car back together. Like honda bond. Expensive *** gasket maker....but it RULES.

don't bother with oem stuff(exedy), people with 2nd and 3rd replacement still has the buzz once the mileage piled up.
replacing clutch on the S took a long **** time, not like a b series motor that you can hump it off and on in 2 hours flat.
<--doing a clutch job on ae86 soon
