Fading of Paint Compounded and Buffed
I wanted to get my car compounded and buffed to get rid of scratches and make it look better, but the guy told me it could fade my paint. He said that since my car never had a clear coat and it's already slightly faded on the hood and spoiler, there's a chance that this would make it fade more and look bad. What should I do? I can't afford a new paint job, so should I still have this done?
Can anyone tell me what they think I should do? I have to tell the guy today if I want to. I think he said that the compounding and buffing would take off a millimeter of paint...
I have very limited painting experience but lemme offer you my 2 cents...
If you have an acrylic (sp?) based paint they will tend to fade very quickly. Most of the newer paint has much better lasting quality. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the fact that the paint is done in different layers and doesn't have a dry look to it. I can't really explain this very well but if your car still has a shine to it you should be fine with the buffing compound. BEWARE that if you have some dumbass like myself trying to do it for the first time you can really **** a paintjob up. Make sure you take it to someone you know and trust. I've done this to my 95 and it took lots of the scratches out and just made the car look very nice. I'd say try the buffing before a new paint job or whatever else you may have heard.
hope this helps,
Noel

I was going to have it done at a shop, the guy is very experienced. I think getting this done would make my paint look much nicer, as long as it doesn't fade much. I'm either going to have this done or settle for the way it is now with scratches and marks.
No, it won't make your paint fade if you keep it waxed after it has been compunded and polished. I work in the detail shop at the Acura dealership in my area. We compound, polish, and hand wax every car someone trades in or whatever and we make them look nice. We charge about $200. I recommend you find someone to do this for you. It's worth the money.
