Default Type S Swap into 98 SH

Hello all, I'm new here... went and looked at a 98 SH today, with a rod knocking. Was thinking of buying it (it's SUPER cheap) and swapping in the type s h22a. Revi, I read on other posts that you have done this...

Are there any caveats at all with this swap? Everything I've read makes it sound like a straight bolt in... pretty straightforward. Also, where would be the best and cheapest place to pick one up? I've heard hmotorsonline.com is a good place for engines.

Thanks in advance.

Not really. The Type-S had higher compression and the cams were a bit more aggressive.

I'd like to keep the features of the SH, and get a little more power out of it without doing all kinds of crazy stuff... getting too old for that.

Is there any other engine I could get to replace it, other than another h22a4 SH set up? I don't really want to just get some random one out of a junkyard or something, because this needs to last me awhile. I know hmotors sells good motors, which is why I want to go with them. I'd like to keep the whole ATTS system in the car, I'm only planning on I/H/E, wheels, tires, and springs on this car.

BTW, the only reason I'm getting in to this is because I have a chance to get a 1998 SH with 74,000 miles on it for $2k. Only real problem is the rod knocking, the rest of the car is in pretty good shape.

Thanks again, guys.

The Type-S drops in like a glove. The only thing you have to do is swing the Type-S engine harness underneath the intake manifold so it will reach the US connectors on the passenger side.

I was originally thinking of building my old SH motor but since this was my only car i didnt want the down time. I must say im happy with the motor. Chirping 3rd gear on 18's is pretty nice! And VTEC is foking loud.

Revi,

Thanks for the response. I'm working on getting a little loan so I can pick this car up soon and start buying stuff for it... Swapping cars is a PITA... have to get a loan for this one, try to get rid of the other one... find space in the driveway.

I'll be happy when this is all done with and the engine is in there and everything is complete...

I made a list of everything I'm going to get for it... and a total... you guys see anything that I missed on there?

1998 Honda Prelude Type SH......................................$2000
H22A Type S 97-98 Complete Motor,Trans,Ecu.............$4000
Timing belt, water pump. fluids.....................................$100
Rear view mirror............................................ ...............$50
Prelude 97-01 OEM Style Complete Bodykit....................$650
Paint Job for body kit from Curtis..................................$200
Intake of some sort, eBay............................................$1 00
Greddy SP2 Catback exhaust........................................$55 0
Neuspeed sport springs........................................... .....$200
17" wheels and tires............................................. ......$1000
Neuspeed short shifter........................................... .......$100
-----------------------------------------------------
Total: $9050

Thanks again, everyone... this is gonna be a pretty sweet car...

Skip the Neuspeed short shifter, change the list price of the eBay intake from $100 to $50, and don't just get springs, get good shocks too

you will always set a budget, but in all actuality it will always go over.

Thanks all for all of these replies. I swear I'm not new to the car thing, I've just been on a CRX kick for the past 5 years, so Preludes are a little foreign to me. Still have my flint black 91 dx... just waiting on the right time for the b16 and auto to manual conversion...

Good call on the shocks, I skipped over those somehow... I'll add those to the list.

Also, what's the deal with the neuspeed short shifter? Just junk?

I'm sure the budget will go over, but luckily I should have the money for everything, since the actual car is only 2k... pretty sweet deal if you ask me, and the body is in pretty good shape actually, just a little dirty. I'm sure the motor has been beat to hell, since it has a knock at 74k, so that was why I just wanted to replace the ENTIRE thing with the type s.

Thanks again...

why not just keep the type-s intake if they give it to you w/ the engine? It has great low to midrange response better than aftermarkets which only gain at high range. Just my 2 cents I also want to do this swap into my 4th someday

I seriously doubt even a motor from hmotorsonline would come with a Type S intake. Also, he doesn't need an aftermarket header. He said he wasn't going for lots of power. The stock header or just a $100 Megan header would work fine for his needs

Type-S motor swaps do come with the appropriate intake.

The Type-S header is different from other H22s.
