Sold my prelude, but it wont pass smog this time around, thoughts?
Last week i sold my car to a guy who had to have a car right at that moment. So he gave me straight cash, went and registered in his name and got everything taken car of. Went to smog the car and the shop he took it too failed it. Told him it either needed new spark plugs, a new o2 sensor, or a new cat, or at the extreme a valve. I just replaced the cat a year and a few months ago, when i smogged the car. He is bring the car back to me tomarrow so that i can help him smog it. The car runs and idles fine, no cel or anything, what do you guys think it is. could it possible be the place he took it too trying to get a few extra bucks outta him? Like i said i just smoged the car a year and a few months back, and the shop i took it too failed it the first time, and said i needed a cat, replaced it took it back, and the guy told me it was one of the cleanest smogs he had seen come in. Input please?
what year is your prelude? how many miles? i know for a fact that all 97 preludes have a emission warranty that if anything failed to work relating to the emission, the dealer will fix it, and i think they will also change your spark plug, wire, distributor cap etc for free, in between 75k to 140k miles...hope this helps
not sure what a smog is, but assume it's the exhaust emissions?
which emission did it fail on??
generally, check exhaust system for any leaks, replace oil, plugs, general tune-up really. maybe a new oxygen sensor is needed if you only replaced the cat recently.

well when the run the emissions test there should be a print out on what failed right? if there is that's going to be fairly easy, if not ask for a print out and fix those things. (again not sure how your state does it but in texas we do get a print analysis)

Okay, YES SMOG Check/test = Emissions Testing.
I am the expert on this Smog shizzle and getting around it.
1. OBD1? or OBD2? If OBD2 and (engine check light is on, automatic Fail)
2. From my previous B series, My piston rings Fried, so it didn't pass.
3. TIMING is off? Last time you had a timing job?
A. Cat B. O2senzzzor C. Ignition Timing
D. All of the above
Just move out of California... Imma get out soon...Screw this dump.
Go to 626 Area and Pay $150-200 Wink Wink, or give the buyer a discount.
California DMV "It is the Responsibility of the SELLER to pass smogg"
Hope this Helps.

Unless the swap is BAR'd then you will fail automatically. No questions asked, they run the vin, and you motor doesnt match the model. You need to post the read out of why it failed, did it not pass visual or was the NoX or HC levels off? It could fail for a **** ton of reasons you need to give more info.
^^Thing is he doesn't know.. He didn't get the car Smog'ed...
I can't help though, never done a smog.. Thankfully!

I don't believe in Illegal Smog either, but California is horrible.
I've gone through 5 hondas, and I try to stick to OBD1 because of this simple reason.
I don't see why California has the Emissions Testing while other States do not.
I BELIEVE IN EQUAL RIGHTS, and some dude in Idaho can drop a Viper motor in a CRX and I can't even put headers on without the Police and Smog people "Punking/ bullying" me around.
I have a Dream, that one day engine swaps and smog laws can live together in peace. WE SHALL OVER COME.
It's JDMism. It's because my Exhaust pipe iS BLACK!??!? . JDM-ism man.

1) more states are imposing emissions testing.
e.g. florida brought their safety back after a 20 year absence.
2) try seafoam from napa or advanced auto.....it says not to use if ur block is over 150k ...i've yet to find out why. (rings?) no idea......
I've seen a lot of forums rep seafoam. I bought some myself but was shy to put it into the intake. I used one can in my gas and crankcase. The half-can I put in my oil broke so much crap loose it clogged the vtec solenoid after a couple days. Crazy.
