I am a long time racing fan, attending races for about 40 years now. There is nothing like the roar of the engines and the veseral thrill of being close to machines passing near you at great speed.

But I think that I get a better appreciation for the race by watching on TV rather than attending. I guess I just do not have a herd mentality being corraled into restricted spaces and not gettting the "total" experience on race day.

For me, the ideal experience is to be at the track on the first day of practice. Smaller crowds, more relaxed security and the opportunity to get closer to the teams.

I prefer to be comfortable on my couch at home for the race.

i would have to disagree.. nothing compares to the sound of a F1 car in real life, the smell of the gas, the impossibility of trying to actually photograph one and keep it in the center of the frame, not to mention being in another country than usa, which 95% of the races are..
granted you get a much better view on tv but there is so much more.. maybe i havent been to enough races to get over the excitement of being at one

i dislike watching f1 on tv, but in person? probably one of the best experiences i've ever had. could be the fact that i was in a remote town in japan and only one of probably five americans within 50 miles, but i dunno. the sounds, the speed, the crowd? unreal.

dont even bother bothering buying a train ticket to suzuka.
every time they as you to see your ticket, show them your "F-u1 Kipu"
works every time

 

Do you mean as in watching the actual race?...I found most road racing useless in person and would rather watch it on tv.. if I actually care what is going on with the race. Though it is nice to see the race cars in person and hear them...at least one time.

id have to agree.

racing isnt a spectator sport that you can watch live without a TV tracking the whole race.

so for an F1 race, id spring for tickets in front of the jumbotron just once, and thats it.

(of course ive never gone to an F1 race yet)

 

The sounds of F1 cars in person is something every car guy/gal should hear in their lifetimes. Unbeliveable. And to say nothing about the incredible braking, cornering, and acceleration!

seeing them take corners at those speeds is breath taking.

hell the sound in person cannot be reproduced in 7.1 surround sound... you have to be there in person. Just don't jizz yoruself

 

I have been going to Canda GP annually for last 18 years and there is nothing beats the sounds and atmosphere in person. Beside, night life downtown with all the manufacturer and the local babes can't be beat on Grand Prix weekend.

i had a rail pass, it only cost a few hundred yen to not look like a stupid american my size really helped getting in the train, though.

Scott, you're getting old.

Being there is awesome, unless you've been there your whole life, then the couch just makes more sense. I couldn't appreciate what the camera was showing me til i went there.

I will go to races til its not worth it for me anymore, then I'll agree. couches are nice because they have climate control, refreshments, and toilets right nearby.

 

x2. Been to three F1 races (one being the Michelin fiasco at Indy) and they've all been entirely worthwhile. Hearing a high reving F1 car on TV is nothing like the deafening screaming banshe sound of the real thing.

Kinda like **** vs. pokin' the whiskers in real life.

 

I believe there should be a balance of both. Each one offers unique experiences the other can't. I have attended a couple F1 races, and watched hundreds of others in TV.

The live races is just not about the cars, it's about the whole ambient...the pit crews working, all the public, getting to know people from around the world...nothing like watching a race in which the local guy wins...the crowd goes wild.

And then there's seeing some of the most perfect machines mankind has ever built roaring away meters from you

It's like any other sport, really.

 

when I went to Indy last year I stood on the bridge at the exact spot above where the cars passed as they roared by, probably one of the coolest things I have ever exerienced. I like watching it on TV, but being there is an experience anyone who likes motorsports has to experience.

 

bridge over the back straight? was it crowded there for practice/qualy? i want to go stand there this year.

When I went they wouldn't let anyone stand up there. We could "walk over slowly," but they had people telling us not to stand there. There was also a screen so we couldn't see anything, but it sounded bad *** when the cars went by below.

The whole experience of everything else going on at the race was awesome too. We camped at Indy, which is definitely the way to go. The sound of the engines revving from the pits is a pretty good alarm clock.

I didn't have anyone come up to me and tell me to keep moving. I was so excited about it, I was grabbing random strangers, pulling them to the spot and saying "stand here". you could see through the screen, it was translucent, not opaque and yes the back straight. I'll be standing up there this year too. Also there was a really cool English guy working the course during the practice section just about at the end of the back straight. He talked to us about the events he's been to, pointed things out and was laughing about the "nutter" who walked out onto the course during the English GP a few years back. The TV also doesn't do the Mclarens justice, that car looks amazing in person IMO

 

I've been to the Indy F1 the last 2 years. I like it and I don't like it. I'm not a big fan of extreme temps, either hot or cold, and it was flippin HOT at the GP last year. I was sitting in the stands just sticky and drenched in sweat with no cover and no relief. I was wishing I was at home in the cool AC watching on TV, but then you see and hear the cars and you remember why you're there. The best of both worlds would be to have a pimp seat in the tower or other covered area with shade and refreshments, and a TV to see all the action you can't view directly. Hmm, I need to get to work on planning for that this year.
