just read the archives for 2 hours, my eyes hurt. there's a lot of info there, but what i'm looking for specifically is feedback from guys who have ACTUALLY upgraded from a jdm fd to an ats, not just theorized about it. most of the archived stuff concerns upgrading from the usdm to the ats. any feedback will help out a lot, thanks
well i went from 4.4 to 4.9
and all i gotta say is it's quite annoying on highways.
and in city.. i can cruise around in 5th gear but i try not to if i can
i like my 1,2,3,4 but not 5th.. it feels like i need 7th gear

I have the 4.9 and i love it. Gears are short and it is probably the best mod i have ever done. Love it, and makes a n/a car feel how its supposed to.</TD></TR></TABLE>
So does the 4.9 increase the "feel" of acceleration without actually accelerating faster? Does it give you that "blood rushing to the back of the head feeling" that an STi's gearing does? Does it change the way the car feels for the passanger as well? I'm trying to get an idea of this too.

Please let's keep his thread on topic - there are plenty of archived posts about the 4.9 itself and vs the 4.4. IIrc, rodney upgraded from 4.4 to 4.7 and then 4.7 to 4.9, so you could ask him.
Going from 4.7 to 4.9 isn't as much of a difference.....
Here's the pic in a thread I had a while back - showing the graphical analysis of the three drives:

Could you not just swap out the 5th gear for something longer?

If you use 5th from an LS tranny with the ATS, you basically end up with the same revs in 5th that you had with the stock gearing. Hell of a drop going from 4th to 5th though lol. I would at least use the GS-R 5th over the "R" 5th if it's ever going to see the highway.

i hope someone who has actually done this will chime in with some feedback, paging rodney!
like blackr said, i'm also of the opinion that there won't be much difference going from the 4.7 to the 4.9, might be a waste of my hard earned money

I have upgraded from a USDM ITR tranny to a JDM ITR tranny. All I have to say is the JDM tranny feels like dog crap. Wasnt worth it. So the JDM ITR tranny was sold and went back to my USDM ITR tranny. I added a GEAR-X final drive (4.9) immediately to my USDM ITR tranny, a world of difference it made. Yes, my car feels much better. The power is more usable now. I dont mind high revving highway speeds.

i've been looking at the gear-x too, seems to better than the mfactory fd, since it's made in germany. any problems with the gear-x fd, like tranny whine?

No whines. The car is driven hard too.

You better believe it. We're married too. She just doesn't know it yet. Who's in yours?
I did a little research and it appears that Cusco did infact make a 5.02 final drive gear. However, they were prone to breaking under hard launching and were discontinued for various reasons.

x2......I've never driven in a 4.9, BUT I'm lead to believe, based on various graphs, the difference b/w the 4.7 to 4.9 is not nearly as noticable as going from 4.4 to 4.7. That's also the feedback I received from members who have actually done the 4.4 to 4.7 to 4.9 when I was deciding what I wanted to do.

Excuse my curiosity, but why do you think the JDM ITR tranny is dog crap? The 1-3 would be the same as a USDM with a 4.7, and JDM 4 and 5 are longer (GSR gears), so there is a drop there. This thread is based around a USDM ITR tranny with a 4.7/4.9, which IMO is anything but dog crap.
ALSO, Gear-X, ATS, Mfactory, etc shouldn't really make a difference in driving feel. A 4.9 ratio is a 4.9 ratio. I don't care how you slice it. I think the production process is the only thing in question in varying companies. I've never heard a complaint about ATS. Your post seems more like a biased commercial.
<---Not a fan of criticism without an explanation only to provide a similar alternative, but for a different company.

just look at the wheel torque graph. anyone that tells you "goin from a JDM (4.785) to ATS (4.929) is like goin from USDM (4.40) to JDM (4.785)." is an idiot
