My friend works at BMW as a mechanic, and he claims he owns a special buffer wheel at home which he can use to resurface my flywheel. Does this sound like it would work? Could I use a straight edge to check it once he's done?

 

take it to a shop that resurfaces flywheels, and percise tools, it only cost 45 bucks to resurface a flywheel

 

I wouldn't recommend having your flywheel resurfaced by someone with a "buffer wheel" at his house.
