opinions on speakers
I know this isn't the audio/stereo spot but I want to get some opinions from some other Type R owners. The factory speakers suck in our cars and I'm looking for some suggestions for what to replace them with. I'm going out tommorow to do some buying. All I'm looking to do is get some new ones for the doors and back seats and a new head unit. The head unit has been decided on but I'm stuck as far as speakers. I want ones that fit in the factory locations with as little modification as possible. Help me out here guys.

CDT, Dynaudio, A/D/S, Rainbow, Focal, Boston Pros are all good choices, some are very pricey but if set up with a decent amp, the SQ will be quality
I don't really want to put any extra amp in the car. I would like to be able to run them off of the head unit. Thanks for the quick response. I am kinda leaning toward the MB Quarts though

MB Quart are good speakers but are "quiet" compared to others. The bostons could probably be run off the stock hu, but most nice speakers are going to sound much better run off of an amp(which would weigh roughly 5-10 pounds)

If your just goin to run the speakers off your stock hu don't bother paying big money for Quarts. You really should get an amp, you won't regret it. The stock hu sucks sooooooooo much.
Please do not spend a lot of $$ on component speakers unless you amplify them properly with an external amp. The stock head unit sucks and not only will you not be able to utilize the new set of speakers fully, you risk damaging them due to clipping if you turn it up.
I would recommend going to your local best buy or circuit city and buying whatever set of components sound the best (and fit in your budget) to you. I use MB Quart Q series speakers but would not dream about running them off the stock head unit.

i 2nd Ddub's reply...
if you get high end quarts (there are several models that vary in quality) which i would assume you want...you definitely need to run them off an amp. the efficiency of the quarts are low, meaning you'll have to power them with a lot more power that what any head unit will provide...
if you want to keep it simple, get some higher efficiency speakers that only require the amount of power your head unit can provide.

it all depends on the music you listen too and the way you like to hear music. The best and only real way to choose speakers is to hear them for yourself.
I'll tell you this, the MB Quarts are very bright speakers meaning that they reproduce tons in the higher pitch range rather then in the softer tone range. Any real audiophile will state that music reproduction equipment can only be truly judged by the ear of the beholder.
Me personally I listen to various music from rock to r&b to rap & to electronic music. I have and had the MB Quart Q series in my car, with other various brands in other cars. Me being sponsored by Rockford Fosgate and car stereo competitor I like to have speakers that produce sounds in extreme levels (where as others don't) and I like to tune them out to my liking.
If I were you spend a weekend (3days at best) to do a stereo research project. Spend Friday night or a previous day checking out and reading on brands of equipment and making a list of shops or people to check out. Then spend a day or two just going around and listening to your own music material on their setup. Try to listen to a song or track that you feel that you know well. Or choose a sound track that you have heard live and remember greatly. Then listen to their setup (fully tuned) and see if it sounds correctly to you. Then compare how all the brands did and choose your speaker.
Doing this is the best way to choose a speaker because no matter what people say hearing sound and music is different for everyone. (I'd hope so because I still don't see how people like hearing that rave music crap!
hahaha)

mb quart q-series are probably some of the best all around speakers out there...although they can run a little high -- here's a good place to get some good prices...and the service is really good too

infinity makes some of the best souding speakers in the industry, but you have to be careful how much power you run to them. same with mb quart.
boston acoustic has the mid to deep range nicely covered...although i'd go with someone else for the components.
as far as subs jl audio has always been a best buy and they just launched their w7 series...some very serious subs (1000 RMS handling).
well that's basically my take on speakers...of course you gotta look well into a new head unit and amps, but that's a whole new topic
hope that helps...

If you are spending decent money on a set of decent component speakers (separates or coaxials) consider getting an amp. You can get a small one which can go under the passenger's side seat. If you are not getting an amp, at least look into one of those "high power" mosfet headunits and make sure the constant power wire is hooked directly to the battery. Those make decent power.
Stay with 6.5" speakers and look for one that have decent midbass response. If you want to keep it as stealth as possible, do a nice set of coaxials like a set of JL Audio XR650CX or a set of MB Quart PKC116s in the front and rear locations. You'll need to make a spacer ring for the front and rear locations though. And make sure you get stick some dynamat in the doors and sidepanels.

Put it simply, I hated the Bostons, A/D/S were too laid back, and Focals too bright. Dynaudios are a good medium, as are the Rainbows.
not sure, but that would be sweet i have two 5.25 component sets so I could put them in the front and back with a tasty amp of some sort
Thanx

Has anyone heard of AVI? I've heard them, and IMHO better than MB Quarts or Boston Acoustics. Would like to hear A/D/S though.

I don't plan to run them off the stock head unit, I do plan to buy a nice aftermarket one. Would a high powered head unit run some of these speakers good enough?

All "higher" end speaker components/coaxials will require a supplemental power source to produce the best clarity.
In other words, buy an amp to obtain optimum performance
