ATTS HELP!!! please! and thank you! (Revi .. please, i beg you, read this !)
okay .... i tried making 2 very long, very elaborate, very witty "quick reply"s on a relevant topic before my 12 hours of being on shift dizzy brain realized it was a locked topic ..... therefore, i'm going to make this relatively quick and painless. If you need more info, just let me know, i'll be more than happy to post it.
okay, quick intro first: this is my first post here. and, if i'm not forgetting something (which isnt entirely impossible) my first post ever on any sort of a car forum, although i've been READING posts for ... well, years. (you may be surprised by how many questions are answered .... 100 times over, in 20 different topics... then again, unless youre one of those guys wearing a n00b badge like i suppose i am, maybe you wont be
) so anyway, this is a somewhat historic moment i suppose, lol.
Anyway, i'm a proud owner of a 1998 Prelude type SH. one who wishes he would have payed a little bit more attention to what "Superior Handling" actually stood for. I'm currently deployed in Iraq, with about another 6 months to go, and i spend pretty much every day dreaming about what i can do to make my car faster when i get home....
Annnnd, as i'm sure youve picked up by now, if youre one of the many knowledgeables running around this forum, i made a stoopid by buying an SH .... and now i need to fix that, as i plan on going FI with my lude as soon as i have the time, and money, and i'm in the same country as my car
but as i've read through this and many other forums, it slowly dawned on me that for FI, or any other real performance boosters, ATTS is not the way to go. Unfortunately, i shelled out 7,000 dollars for my lude, bought and paid for, and thats a mistake i dont want to fix by replacing the whole dang car.
As i said, i tried posting already in a topic that seemed to be veering in the direction i'm trying to go, but that was a no go, so here i am, and heres my question. I want to swap my ATTS tranny with a base tranny, so i can go on my merry way, boosting and tuning, until i crash in a 500+ HP heap on the side of the road =P. i've pretty much determined from what i've read that it is definately doable, and that the only REAL hassle is getting a custom adapter plate for the intermediate shaft. what i need to know is ... where the heck do i get it ? will i need to fabricate it myself ? modify an existing plate ? can i buy it somewhere ?
not to put anyone else down, but so far in my research here into the whole ATTS debate/interest/curiousity/hatred/etc. Revi seems to be very knowledgeable, prehaps to the point of having done this before ?
So please, anyone with any real info, please, please help me out here, anything is appreciated, pictures, resources, links, etc. i AM going to do this, and i want to do it right. i just need you all to tell me what right is
again, thanks in advance, and a tip of the hat to everyone here that actually knows what theyre talking about and contributes that knowledge to the good of everyone else. and a big fat finger to all the losers who love to argue with those who know based off some "facts" they think the thought they might have heard one time from that one guy who wrote a book.
*Disclaimer* my grammar may be horrible, as well as my spacing and punctuation. But at least all the words are spelled right, aside from those intentionally spelled incorrectly for ease of typage (IE: "tho") any other typo's i accredit to lack of sleep, lack of caring, or being in friggen Iraq =P

and your question is what.....can you put a base transmission on a SH block?
Yes
Do you need to make the adapter?
Yes
Could all of these questions been answered if you searched before you posted?
Yes

Well here is my suggestion. Screw the adapter plate.
Since you said you are planning on going boost. Buy your self a second BASE block on the side. This way you can build the block for boost (sleeve it, pistons, ect) and you wont have any down time with your lude. After you get it built you slap on a base 5spd tranny (get an LDS while your at it, and change out the syncros) swap on your SH head and other stuff and your good to drop the motor in.
You could always go the adapter fabrication way, but like you said either you make it your own or have someone else do it. The thing i dont like about making the adapter plate is the HP and Torque limits of it have never been found, and i would hate for the adapter plate to break on me and take other things with it. There are a few people on this board who have made the adapter plate and in preludeonline.com there is a write up on how to do this.

I have CNC versions of these adapter plates available now if you decide you want to keep the SH block. They are made out of steel and the biggest load they see is when accelerating hard with slicks, like when launching at a drag strip. In this case, most of the force the plate sees is towards the back of the block, so the fasteners to the block are not in shear or tension from this load. Also, if you look at the newer honda engines like the K-series, you'll see that the intermediate shafts use an aluminum bearing bracket that mounts to the block with only two M10 bolts. Here are some threads with related info; good luck:

okay, 1: your kitten picture ISNT cute madcatz, and i did read before i posted, and i knew that i needed to either make or somehow "get" an adapter, and my question was "can someone tell me how, or point me in the direction of the right thread to do this, or give any advice on the matter" none of which you did, so um ... thanks =P
2: thanks a ton Revi, i'm seriously thinking about buying another block ... but thats adding even more money to the job that i'm not entirely sure is justified, although having a "backup" once i'm done will definately be a good idea. the general direction that i'm leaning towards right now is kinda "quick speed" ie: everything bolt on that i can for right now, just so that the car is turbo'd and just keep the psi low, while i buy another engine and spend plenty of time doing that one the "right" way. getting it sleeved, etc. due to the fact that this car is pretty much going to be a work in progress for as long as i can keep putting money into it without my wife divorcing me.
anyway, do you think that would be absolutely retarded ? i'm kindof trying to have my cake and eat it too i suppose .... mostly because i'm pretty impatient. anyway, i can tell i'm rambling, so i'll stop now, hopefully all that wasnt too confusing and someone might have some sort of input
3 thanks a ton PirateMcFred, for actually reading my first post, and responding, instead of acting like a stuck up little 600 some poster with a "cute" kitten avatar =P i'll definately pm you about that adapter plate, if i can figure out how to pm anyway
again, thanks guys, appreciate the response, definately what i was looking for. and again, everyones opinions are very welcome about whether my taking the quick and easy route for the moment is assenine, or understandable

okay ... think i figured out how to pm .... and i dont think i can do it with my cutesy little n00b account, lol .... if you dont mind, PirateMcFred, i'd appreciate it if you could drop me a line at lcssihm@yahoo.com i'm very interested in one of these custom plates, how much are you asking for one ? how thick are they, whats the most HP load that has been put on one you had CNC'ed ? hopefully i'll hear from you soon ! and thanks again (still following those 2 links around and reading up some)
This thread answered some quests for me, yay! I may be hitting you up for one of those adapter plates Pirate, not sure if i want to just build a new block or work with the one i have yet.
Also wanted to say good luck in Iraq, I was there for half of OIF I and all of II.
