VIPER 5000/5002
I am looking to get either a Viper 5000 or 5002....I don't see much difference between the two, and obviously the 5002 is a newer model. Just wanted to know if anyone bought any of these alarms and what the experience was like....good or bad. I have heard that Compustar is also a good alarm....is this true and how does it compare to the Viper 5000/5002? Where can I get a Compustar alarm....I am from San Diego, CA. and I don't know of any dealers here. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

thanks for the info.....i'm not seeking something fancy, just enough security to get by. I don't need the automatic start up or keeping the engine warm....nothing fancy like that. Just the basic stuff like: shock sensors, fail safe starter kill, horn honk, 6 tone Revenger siren, backup battery, Clone Safe code hopping...these are all necessary for my needs. I haven't heard too much about Compustar, but judging from their website, they seem to be a decent company. Does anyone know what the pricing is for a good Compustar alarm system.....again nothing too fancy, but in the same or better quality as the Viper 5002. Thanks Again!!

well directed.com offers viper phython hornet all of those are the same company , i actually never heard of compustar so i dont know any feedback on this and wow it seems neat i too wonder if its a month to month fee charge for tracking and knowing where your car is based from a pc....
uhh a high end alarm kit will set you back about 550 in circuit city , low end one around 200 or so , if you dont need a 2 way transmiter ( car alerts you on the remote where its been triggerd) and the screen or remote start then any basic alarm from directed.com will do , stick to a well known branded alarm even if its their lower end model , as far as the website i just told for refrenses

This is the alarm I've been using. Had one on my EVO and Type R, had no problems with either. My buddy is an installer though, so I got it done for free. Not sure how much it would actually cost to be installed.

automatic start-up....and two way paging....I mean.....really....in my opinion, if you are a mile and a half away from your car, and someone decides to break your window....are you gonna run a mile and a half back to your car?....little too late for that, since it only takes a thief less than 5 minutes to get what he wants. So...with that in mind....what's the sense of having a two way paging system? Yes, while it may be true that Compustar is a good car alarm....is that just based on the range of the paging system?....what makes Compustar so special?....I've also noticed that Compustar has a 900 mhz coding....unlike Viper's Clone-Safe Code Hopping. Now....i'm not an expert at car alarms, but is Compustar's coding safe?....can it be defeated by someone....900 mhz?...that just doesn't sound reliable. I would appreciate any input, since I need to get a reliable alarm.....I am thinking of going with the Viper 5000 or 5002.....alot of the dealers that I have spoken with all recommend this system. I really need more input with Compustar....anyone else have any experience with this system?....what's so special about it? Thanks in advance.

Wow......OK, without being too derogatory, all alarms now "code hop". If you look at the back of an aftermaret alarm remote, it probably says 2^66 ( for those not too math savy that means 2 to the 66th power or 2 times itself 66 times). either way, LOTS OF CODE HOPPING!!! you can buy an alarm for 50 bucks that does that. if you want a cheap alarm, then buy a cheap one. if you want an expensive one, pay more for it. they all do the same thing. you've stated in a previous post "you don't need to know if your car is a mile and a half away getting broken into", so there's no point in having an alarm to alert you of it. so why keep posting pointless questions? just go to the nearest Best Buy or Circuit city and buy the cheapest $hit they have and have them install it for you. obviously Lojack would be the best system to have, but not everyone can afford it.

not sure how much lojack is, it think it's between 500-1000. It's not really an alarm, just enables you to locate (GPS) your car if it is stolen.
found this: it's $695 on this site, but like i said, only helps if your car is stolen.

I had the Viper 5000 in my old car with a motion sensor. Worked great. Only real concern is the remote pager. It's very sensitive so you can't just throw it around like a set of keys cause it'll break easily
Thanks to everyone who replied to my posting.....I ended up getting the Viper 5000....added a hood pin and trunk pin. Will also be adding a backup battery....not sure about the motion sensor....the installer that I spoke with said that motion sensors are good, however, if you live in an area that has lots of traffic, then it could set off the alarm. Most people complain of the "false" alarm, due to the sensitivity of the motion sensors. But aside from everything else.....this seems to be a decent alarm.
One thing that I agree on is that the 2 way remote is very fragile.
