Major oil leak behind oil filter pedestal
As the title says. I changed the oil, thinking it was a leak from the oil filter.
It seems as if some sort of seal there has gone out. Does anybody have pictures/parts diagrams showing what would be required to fix it?
Thanks.

Phil you nub....lol
That o-ring goes out all the time on h22s......
You just need an extra large socket set or a pair of channel locks, I forget the exact size of the bolt though....
click the link. its #33

This is slightly confusing.
From the oil filter in, is the order of parts:
Oil filter, threaded thing (#22), Other threaded thing (#19), Pedestal (#18), O-ring (#33) - Block?
So I have to separate the two threaded things to remove the pedestal, or can I just stick a 30mm on it and pop it off?
Also, are the threaded things what hold the pedestal on? As in, remove the things and then the pedestal will come off?

#22 is not part of the assembly. You only need to remove #19 to get the oil cooler freed from the engine (the coolant lines will keep you from removing it completely, though).
To install the new o-ring, use some Hondabond to hold it in place. If the o-ring is really floppy, just freeze it for a few hours.
Be very careful not to pinch the o-ring when you install it. You'll know if you pinched the o-ring because the engine will barf oil when you start it. You can't fix it once you've pinched it, you have to install a new o-ring.

All the time.
30mm socket & a new oil cooler o-ring and you're set.

Nice. I changed my oil today and noticed some seepage old oil around that area, so I'll have to change it soon.
So just a 30mm socket and it the threaded peice will come out?
Also, does the o-ring have some sort of groove that it fits into? If there isnt one, is it best to put it on the block then put the cooler over it, or on/in the cooler and put that to the block?

92-96 Preludes all have grooves for the o-ring.
97-01 Preludes do not have grooves.
On my 4th gen, I put a few dabs of RTV to help secure the o-ring into the groove, as it has the dedency to fall out.

Went to replace it (failed the first time, pinched the o-ring), and it's ******* impossible to reach anything in there. I tried to get the coolant lines off to remove the pedestal completely, but that didn't work out (no clearance).
The o-ring is in the freezer now. Hoping to make it less pliable and thus easier to put on later tonight.
Anybody have any more tips about getting it in? It's kicking my ***.
And why in the hell are there TWO grooves on the damn thing? The outer groove is pointless.

Yeah... I was thinking about that when I was changing my oil. It seems like it would be hard to get in there and have room to replace an o-ring... esp laying on your back!
It's the inner groove. And I know what you're going through. I first thought that I got the wrong size o-ring, but that's not the case. Clean the area really well. I used simple green. Use some hondabond and work the o-ring slowly into the groove.
Do you have the old o-ring? Try putting it back on -- it should easily "snap" in. Then, get a flash light and just take a look. Sometimes you just need to see it in there.

Mine is a 5th gen, same comment's apply. The inner "groove" is not much of a groove, but there's clearly an indentation for the o-ring. Atleast that's what I remembered.
Clean the area, freeze the o-ring, dab a little HondaBond on one side of the ring and work it around the groove.
I remember distinctly seeing where the old o-ring was on the engine block as well. It seemed a bit shinier. You might want to try and stick the o-ring on there instead. This is just suggestion and I've never heard anyone do this successfully.

EDIT: Do you know what size socket I'll need to remove the pedestal? Or would it be easier with just a big wrench?</TD></TR></TABLE>
big wrench is too heavy to manage... just look for one that could fit in to the socket...
Thanks a bunch
