I bought some side mirrors that are green and I'm gonna paint them black. What do I have to do with keeping the paint on there and making it look fresh. I'm a n00b at painting. What kind of prime, paint, and coat maybe some sandpaper advice?

 

Sand them with 80 grit, then 320. Do a good job. Shoot sealer on them, 2 coats, then spray your paint, 3 coats.

GO to a paint store and get some 600 or 400 grid wet or dry sandpaper sand till u see no shine once ur done with that ur ready to just throw down some paint PPG paint is always the best but omni paint is good and cheaper when u paint the mirrors just hang em on somethin and fold em in ward so u get everythin

Omni is made by PPG.

 

if there plastic it doesnt matter ur gonna paint the whole mirror anywayz so just hit it with some 600 grit sandpaper and good to go!

 

just scuff the clear up really good. get some 320 and sand in a circular motion till there is no more shine. dont cut through the clear. (clear sands white, base sands the color of the base, in this case green)

then clean it off really good. you can go up to 400 or 600 if you want but its not necessary.

it would be much easier to scuff the mirrors with red scotchbrites, with all the curves and tight spots. also please do not put 80 grit paper on their, it will scuff it way more than you want. and if scotchbrites arent available then deff. 320-600 will work fine.

after i sand, i add on the primer paint, let it dry and add the black paint?

 

what kind of paint dispencer are u using? rattlecan? spraygun?
for me i can get some great results from a rattlecan with wetsanding and patience.

im trying out the techniques on a ctr grill first.

i sanded down my grill (abs plastic) and i spray painted in red. and it came out rrreeeaaaallllyy sticky, so im guessing it was because i didnt add the primer before. so i have to start all over again.

sanded down the mirrors with 320 grit paper and i just went back and forth. it seems good and ready for paint tomorrow.

x2 on that, a shity preparation will give you a shity end result.
And this rule guys aplied to anything that you paint, including your car you can have the most expensive paint ever and if you or the person doing the job did not took his time preparing, you or the person doing the job just wasted it some good expensive paint.

i think i may have a problem. i notice that the section where it holds the mirrors, are smooth and fresh while the mirrors itself is kinda rough and maybe little sticky. anybody know whats up? i used even amount of paint & clear coats on them, should i add more clear coat? i dont think it was because they were hanging upside down.

 

Can you take some pictures? that will help. Fallow the instructions of the paint can, is always better to apply a couple of thin coat at a time than to spray a lot at one time. It might look like is ok when in fact the paint is probably running so slowly that you can hardly see it. Also check the temp of the room you painting, sometimes that can be a factor.

 

you might have sprayed too much too shortly.. paint takes a few days to FULLY cure.
my process (off my head for big parts) is usually:

find clean area with no wind
rough up whatever your painting with sand paper
two thin coats of primer:
first coat lightly wait a few mins
then second coat to make sure i've covered everything
then i'd find some glossy spray paint(no need for clear coat):
first light coat then second light coat
third light coat making sure everything is covered
then a generous last coat.
wait a few days for it fully dry
wetsand if neccessary
then a compound to make it nice and shiny again

i forgot if i wetsand the glossy paint or not.. i don't remember if i did... last thing i rattle canned was a fender and rear bumper it was over 6 months ago... it was beautiful.. nice and shiny
