Bent valves? How to tell--Photo intensive
Well I pulled my head, finally, and everything looks good to me...besides the broken belt. How can I tell if my valves are bent? They appear to be seated very well, hardly a mark on them...you can see on the pistons there are faint semi-circles where I'm guessing the exhaust valves touched, but other than that.
Check out the pics.

its kind of hard to tell by just looking at the cylinder head with the human eye. what problems were you having? normally i would run compression checks in all of the cylinders to isolate which one(s) is/are the problem cylinder(s) and then run a leakdown check to determine whether its the rings or if its the valves or if its something else entirely. hth.
Timing belt broke. So should I have put a new belt on and then did a compression and leak-down test...then tear it down from there?
Ghetto fabulous trick:
Tip the head on its side. Spray a little brake clean in the ports. If a good amount leaks out...there is your bent valve.
Good luck. I hope nothing is messed up or bent.

Those kinda already look like Toda pistons to me.....?
BTW, we spun my valves on a lathe to check and you can tell they were bent cuz they wobbled around....

i love when you guys post pics of your engines and stuff cracked open. I'm just getting into the sport and don't know all that much about tearing down an engine, but it looks amazing, i just wish i had some friends around here that knew that **** that could teach me as they did there cars

If you want to check for a bent valve ( assuming you have the valves out of the cylinder head ) go get a drill and yank the drill bit out. Then stick the stem of the valve in there and press the button to make the valve spin. If its all wabbly then you've got some bent valves. I did that with my old valves after my cousin missed 4th gear and hit 2nd gear after redlining third. Man! I should have recorded a movie of how bent those valves were. Good luck with your car.
yeah..if you have the valve out...put it in a drill motor...and turn it on...there shouldnt be any wobble at all..
you wernt able to pin point with your leakdown?

And your pistons look like crap. Running a little too rich????
As Kanji said, lay the head on its side and fill the ports up with a thin fluid( water) and watch for leaks around the valve. Then do the other ports the same. I would recomend taking each valve out and check the seats , also roll the stem of the valve on a flat table and watch the head move or woble.
Good luck !.

Yea, a little rich, Yoshio is pretty conservative
BTW, GS-R ECU, tuned by Yoshio (Japanese Automotive)

Anyone know where I can get a spring compressor like this Snap-on one?
Since the cylinder head is already off the car, why don't you just use a valve spring compressor made by Crafstman (readily available at Sears)? It will save you a lot of money especially considering the cylinder head is already off the car.

Thats not really conservative, thats just too rich, guarantee you were making
less power with that much carbon build up.
It's carbon. I was pretty surprised myself actually. Believe me, if I didn't have so much damn money invested in this ECU, I would go with something else....perhaps Hondata, since it can control 440cc injectors.
