Alternator
Hi All,
I'm still in my long journey to fix this elusive rattle that I hear in my engine bay. I've also got a mechanic stethescope and found that it was coming from the alternator so naturally i thought it was the bearings. So I went and got them replaced and put back in... BUT the sound is still there??! Any other ideas guys?
The sound is definately loud when I put the stethescope on the alternator... but the guys at honda said that it could be the timing belt tensioner bearing which could resonate the sound through the belt and to the alternator??
Any ideas would be great. This rattling is soooo annyoing!

I know its kinda risky but why not have a buddy stand on your motor head while you roll at 5 mph... im sure he will be able to hear it a little better. I have done it a few times and works every time.

lol... thats interesting... thanks for the alternative method, however this noise also occurs when its just idling... so thank god no one has to stand on the engine whilst its moving.
Any other experiences, ideas etc?

Just take off each belt one by one and rule out pwr. strg. and alternator. if the noise is still there after taking the alternator belt off then you know its behind the
timing belt cover. You can actually run the car without the cover...then you can
put your stethescope on t-belt tensioner and see if it makes noise.

Thanks for the help guys... I find that the rattling speeds up when the belts are running faster... Also the engine noise hides the rattling when you rev it.
Can I take of the alternator belt before I start the car and it would run fine?

Yes, but the car will only run as long as the battery has juice.
