Can you tell me if this engine has VTEC?
Friend bought a Del Sol with a swapped 1999 Canadian Civic engine.
Here's a picture of the engine bay... curious if this is the D16Y8 with SOHC VTEC? Gauge is from the Civic and redlines at about 6800rpm.

Thanks so much!

Thanks, that was fast and kind of what I thought too... was hoping for a Civic EX 127hp engine.
In this case, what can be done to add some power to the car? Other than full swap... is swapping in a VTEC head worth the trouble?

whats the engine code on the block say???
the y8 has that kind of intake(woops not) and exaust manifolds.
see that there is no cat on the header and the intake doesn't curve up.

looking at my motor from that angle you can still see the solenoid wire peeking out. also the intake mani. is def. not a Y8 mani.
EDIT:

in yellow: vtec solenoid and wire
in green: Y8 intake mani.

Hmm.... the mystery continues. I won't see the car again until this weekend.
The original seller said it was a 1999 Civic Si (equivalent of Civic EX in USA) engine... should I tell my friend he's been duped into a non-VTEC engine?

(scratches head) Where's the Engine Number plate? There should be a code stamped on the block that tells you exactly what model engine it is, and from there you'll be able to find out what its specs are.
My Helms shows 96-97 Del Sol engine plate being located to the right of the bar-code on the transmission in your picture. (in that pic the bar code is below the upper radiator hose) Maybe it's just really dirty but I don't see even the faintest outline of a stamping there.
Next time you see the engine, I'd look there and relay the code back to this thread. Unless the guy was mechanically inclined enough to start swapping parts between dissimilar engines (e.g. VTEC head onto non-VTEC block) the engine code will say exactly what it is.
If you want to know if your friend really got bamboolzed, relay the VIN too. Strip the serial number off the end (last 6 numbers) if he's paranoid. If the engine code says it's from a base model Sol, and the VIN says it's a base model Sol... motherfarking seller sold him a base model Sol!

O rly?

It look like a OBDII block, however it have a ODBI intake manifold. 96-00 valve cover. 92-95 DX exhaust manifold..
On top of that it's in a 93-95 del sol. And aren't all 93-95 del sol ODBI.

thats what i think. its deff. a obdII block from where the dipstick location is. THe intake is obdI, fuel pressure reg is on the opposite side of a odbII fuel rail and no purge soleniod. could be a y8 block y7 head. youll just have to look at the block code, but no vtec for sure

Your Dumb. Not all 94+ civics in Canada have vtec. If you dont have a Vtec solinoid you dont have Vtec. Unless Canada came up with some other way for Vtec to engage besides oil pressure(which they didnt). You can have Vtec without the solinoid. You yourself even said you cant feel, so what makes you think you have it?
