Best place to mount rear braces in SCCA/NASA cage???
Hey all,
Doing my first import cage...CRX. Was wondering 2 things actually. I really want to mount the main hoop on the upper portion of the floorboard where the rear seat originally sat...is this okay? If I mount it on the same level of the floorboard that the seats are on, the main hoop will be way out in the middle of the door and look shitty.
Also, on the rear braces/supports coming off the back of the main hoop...is it best to do the tube across the shock towers then tie into their, or go straight to the floorboard with them? I REALLY wish I could bend the rear braces but the rulebook says otherwise. Id like to put one bend in them, and mount them right behind the shock towers on the floorboard near the bumper support.
Anyand all input is appreciated! Thanks!

mount the rear down tubes as close to the upper rear damper mounts as you can.
On every CRX i have seen the main hoop has been mounted on the bottom floor, were the front seats mount. You will probably want to run a harness bar that goes back to give some room for the seat also.
You could PM prkiller on this site and ask him for some pictures of his cage. He has a nice NASA legal cage in his CRX.

Cool! Thanks man! Ill have to do some more looking. I know most are mounted to the floorboard on the same level as where the seats mount, but would it still be legal to mount it on the higher level? I dont see anywhere in the rulebook where it says it has to be down there. Says something to the effect of "must be mounted to the floorboard in 6, 7,or 8 places"...but thats it.
To be honest, I cant believe how vague the rulebook is as compared to the NHRA one Im used to! NHRA is like set in stone, this is how it is...NASA/SCCA are kind like "this will work.." sort of thing. For example...+/- .010" on tubing thickness?!?!?! What the hell is that?! HAHA. If your gonna make rules, make some rules! Anyone else have any input on this???

Also, do the floorplates have to be fully welded or can they be stitch welded? Geez...this rulebook needs some work! HAHA. Any and all help is appreciated as usual!

In road racing NASA/SCCA aren't the end all be all. They have some allowances for other certifications, like the FIA.
I would weld completly around the base plates, every car i have seen does this.
The basic structure is layed out plain and simple, however you can do more then that. And in some areas i would ALWAYS do more. Ex door bars, or triangulation.

Sounds good. Welding the base plates to the super thin sheetmetal is a fun task! HAHA. Sucks big time. Got the main hoop tacked up and all. Yeah, the triangulation thing will come into play at the end. Thanks again for your help!

while i have never actually done much welding, i do hang out around shop that does a lot o cages. The one time i was trying to tack some thin cover plates over some OEM holes i kept blowing it out. the guy who did the cages came over made some adjustments on the machine and it was a lot easier. When i asked him about the base plates he said it took him awhile to get it right but now he has it pretty much down.
You aren't just doing one plate on the floor are you?

What do you mean by just one plate on the floor? I have a plate under each down tube that ties into the floorboard. I got the welding part of it down. I just hate making a bunch of tack welds, but thats the only way to do it really. Should have got the TIG out and went at it with that...then I could of actually ran a bead.

IMO there really should be more. two vertical plates on the vertical panels will do a lot of the strength.

The 2 front ones are betn up onto the vertical side of the rocker panels. The 2 for the main hoop are fairly flat but taper off on one edge. All I gotta plate now is the rear shock towers. Thanks for all your help man!
