RE: 2003-2004 Element Windshield Warranty Extension Update
On November 22, 2006, we announced an extension to the 2003-2004 Honda Element Windshield Warranty via Service Bulletin 06-084. This warranty extension presumes coverage unless a large or heavy object struck the windshield. The extended coverage is the result of a class action settlement. The Settlement Agreement provides:
The “Pen Test” will no longer be used to determine the cause of a crack in a Class Vehicle windshield. Cracks will be presumptively covered under the applicable warranty (or extended coverage under the Special Campaign) absent an open or obvious condition that would invalidate coverage. Examples of open or obvious conditions would include, but are not limited to, an automobile collision, an accident, natural disaster damage, or an impact with a large or heavy foreign object.
Recently, we received complaints that owners were denied warranty coverage for cracks that were not the apparent result of a large or heavy object hitting the glass as specified under the heading “DIAGNOSIS” in S/B 06-084. To ensure you are using the most updated information, please refer to Service Bulletin 06-084, dated November 22, 2006, for the latest repair and warranty information.
The inspection procedures (sometimes referred to as the “pen test”) shown in the article “What Caused That Windshield Crack?” in the April 2004 edition of ServiceNews is not valid for the 2003-2004 Element windshield. Please ensure that your staff is not using this inspection method when determining windshield coverage for the 2003-2004 Element.
Additionally, we suggest that you call your DSPM for guidance if there is any doubt whatsoever about warranty coverage. We also suggest that you take and keep a photograph of the windshield and attach it to the repair order if warranty coverage is being denied.
Thank you.
