heater crapped out
okay, so it's cold as expletive outside and my heater crapped out on me about a month ago. i checked the fuses, nothing is blown. it blows out warm air but doesnt get any hotter than that. i cant figure out what else is wrong and it's pissin me off. i called in sick today cuz i caught a cold from my car not warming up; hopefully i can get some answers and fix this problem today while i'm off. thanks in advance!

You're in SC. It was only -4F here today with a high of 11F.
Have you checked the coolant level? What is the temperature gauge reading?

still pretty damn cold in the morning and night, then complimented by rain. then the next day it's warm again. i think the crazy weather variances is whats gettin me sick. but anyway, the temp. and coolant levels are reading normal.

I have a DA; and the temp. control still somewhat works. I could have it turned all the way to hot but it only blows out warm air. It doesnt even heat up when the car is at normal running temp. The defogger/defroster or whatever its called, it works fine. Maybe it has somethin to do w/ the temp. ****? that's my best guess cuz i checked everything already.

Check the valve located on the firewall. It opens when you turn the heat to hot. Perhaps it is not connected to the cable. Has the effort required for the temperature control changed recently?

Don't want to hijack your thread but I am having the same problem. My car will operate at normal temp but heater only blows out warm air. The temp control works harder than usual when pushing to the hot side. I can only push ~ 80% of the way over and then there is alot of resistance and I don't want to break it. Any pics of the valve you mention?

This is the valve on a DA (part 1).

This is the valve on a DC (part 4).

They are located in the engine compartment on the firewall. Look for the heater core lines.

dude i think we do have the same problem cuz my **** also doesnt turn all the way so i forced it. i think i may have broken it out of frustration.
I checked yesterday after I came home and the valve does not seem to move. When the climate control lever is as far warm as I can move it, the valve is at about 4 o'clock or almost perpendicular to the right as you are looking at it from the front of the car. If I switch it to the cold it is in the same position. What I don't understand is if I move the climate control to the cold it will blow out cold air. But on heat it doesn't blow out hot, just warm.
Since the temperature of the coolant to the heater core is not controlled, it is basically on or off. To control the temperature, a percentage of the air passes the heater core and the remainder does not. When the hot and cold streams are mixed, you get warm. That is why you can still modulate the temperature somewhat.
Try to manually open the valve on the firewall as a temporary fix. This should allow full flow to the heater core.

I was having this same problem, but my thermostat wasn't working properly. It had stopped working when it was open. Therefore, my temp gauge was reading cold, I was getting shitty gas mileage and my heater was blowing out somewhat warm air, kinda seemed more cold than warm. Maybe your thermostat is going out. It's worth a try, it cost me $12 to replace
Took me 15 minutes to fix my problem. Gl witht he fix

my temp gauge reads normal, i changed it last year. hopefully i'll fix it by this weekend...while im installing my keyless entry/alarm system. sounds like a busy weekend for me haha
i turned the valve away from "shut" and still no luck. this might sound like a dumb idea but i dont have any freon...does that have anything to do w/ heater issues? i'm all out of ideas and thats all i can think of...
Lack of Freon should not affect the heater. You may have a clog in your heater core or the switching mechanism could be jammed. Can you move the heater control to hot when the valve is manually opened?
